It’s Busy, It’s Exciting… It’s the End of the School Year!
If there has ever been a question about whether Hargrave provides a wide variety of activities and opportunities for cadets, one need only to look at end-of-year activities to know that we abound in opportunities.
Here is a quick run-down of what’s been happening in the month of May. The Varsity Sports Banquet and Dinner was held on Saturday the 2nd, recognizing athletic efforts in eleven sports. The Senior Picnic was held on Thursday, May 7th. Our 78 seniors enjoyed themselves to lots of food at Elkhorn Lake here in Pittsylvania County. Plus, many of our companies and faculty advisory groups have been having end-of-the-year cookouts, picnics and dinners of their own.
A quick comment about the seniors and this year’s Senior Prank. It couldn’t be missed. Somehow the seniors entered the main hall and covered it in sticky notes. This was no mere note here or there, there were thousands all over the walls!
Mother’s Day weekend had picture perfect weather and included a military parade in which mom’s pinned their sons who achieved Dean’s and President’s list status, and concluded with a luncheon. Our Art Department also held their annual student art show over Mother’s Day weekend.
Since May 1st students have been inducted into the Spanish Honor Society and the Société Honoraire de Français. Not to be left out, Mu Alpha Theta, the math honor society inducted members earlier in the semester. The Court of Honor was held Sunday, May 3rd for the Boy Scouts and eighteen earned rank advancement and three received Eagle Scout awards. Going back to the last week of April, the Beta Club volunteered at the Special Olympics track and field competition in Danville. Members escorted athletes, served as finish line timers, helped at specific events, and did whatever needed to be done.
Hargrave’s in-house literary magazine, Sound Off, was released the first week in May. It includes student compositions, art and photography; as well as the Mary Tallent Writing Contest winners. These awards are given to Cadets who show exceptional writing ability, unique talent, and eloquent expression through their work. In addition, the Cadence, Hargrave’s annual was distributed on Friday, May 8th.
This year’s annual theme was “Tradition & Transition,” in keeping with our Centennial Celebration. It was a whopping 201 pages long!
In the past week our Center for Integrated Studies (CIS) program for 7th – 9th graders presented a play titled “This is a Test” in the auditorium. On Friday, May 8th the 9th graders participated in Transition Day, which prepares them for 10th grade in the fall. The program started with a breakfast and included comments from current Post Graduate football players discussing the importance of good grades, and the Academic Dean and College Placement Coordinator discussing how to build a successful college application.
During the final week of school all students are completing final exams. JV Sports, Academic, and Military Awards will be given during ceremonies on May 12th.
The Baccalaureate
Service will be held Friday, May 15th. The Center for Integrated Studies awards program will be held Saturday, May 16th, as well as the graduation parade. 7th – 11th grade students head home on Saturday. Seniors will have the Senior Dinner Saturday evening, May 16th. During the dinner, seniors will receive end of year awards. Graduation will be held Sunday, May 17th in the chapel. Each student will be presented their diploma by the President and Academic staff, plus a Bible, presented by the Director of Alumni.
