A 1971 graduate of Hargrave and a 1975 graduate of West Point, Sloan earned both Airborne and Ranger qualifications and served as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army. He earned a Masters in Economics from the University of Missouri in Kansas City and a Masters in Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Sloan spent more than 20 years in banking in Charlotte, NC; Atlanta, GA; Nashville, TN; and Birmingham, AL. In 2004, he retired from AmSouth Bancorporation, a New York Stock Exchange–traded corporation, where he served as Vice Chair and Chief Financial Officer. In 2010 Sloan was named Hargrave’s Outstanding Alumnus; in 2018, he was named Distinguished Graduate at West Point. Nominated by President Obama to serve as the Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Sloan was confirmed by the Senate on February 11, 2014, serving until January 20, 2017. On May 30, 2014, Sloan was appointed Acting Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Prior to his appointment, he served as President and CEO of the United Service Organizations (USO), which has been lifting the spirits of American Service members and their families for more than 75 years. Sloan has a long history of service and leadership with various nonprofit organizations and served as Interim President of Hargrave during the ’21-’22 school year.
