Hargrave Competes at the

VISAA Wrestling & Swim Championships

Five Hargrave Wrestlers participated in the VISAA State Tournament held at Benedictine College Prep in Richmond. Starting off the first round with pins were 8th Grader Grayson Andrews and Senior Eryk King. On Saturday, Andrews and King scored early pins and Jackson came back with a big 9-2 win. To miss the 2021 season, place 8 wrestlers at 2022 VIC Conference Championships, and place 3 out of 5 at the 2022 State Championship speaks volumes of the work ethic and attitude of Hargrave cadets and our coaches.

The Swim team left campus at approximately 2:00 pm Thursday. There was a lot of positive chatter and excitement in the 4 hour trip to Sterling, VA. They arrived at the Claude Moore Recreation Center that evening and participated in a 25-minute warm-up to become familiar with the venue. They then headed to Chipotle for some carbs! The boys wanted to stop at the local GameStop and Target afterward, and they spent most of their time in the toy section before coming away with Pikachu slippers, Hot Wheels sets, and RC cars!

Friday morning, it was a complete madhouse! Over 670 swimmers from 49 teams were competing. This venue was not big enough even for the number of people present. The boys complained that the water was very cold and shivering was an issue. But they put on their brave faces and did their absolute best under the extreme conditions.

In his first individual event, Sebastian Medina (Danville, VA ’23) competed in the 200 Individual Medley. Sebastian did not beat his Personal Best, but he did finish 23rd out of 35 competitors. In his only individual event, John Wall (Mount Juliet, TN ’24) competed in the 50 Bonus Freestyle and set a Personal Best by 0.32 seconds. In the final event for us of the day, Sebastian Medina competed in the 100 Butterfly. Sebastian was just 0.10 seconds off setting a new Personal Best.

On Saturday, the boys were scheduled to warm up at 7:05 am, but with our relay not competing until 11:15 am, the tea decided to leave the hotel at 10:00 am and use an available warm-up lane. Five swimmers qualified for States, and we entered the fastest 4 out of the team. That meant that Junior Verwest (Fort Myers, FL ’26) would not compete, and he accepted the decision graciously. As an 8th grader, he has many years to return and qualify outright. He was very mature and supportive of his teammates.

The relay consisted in order: Sebastian Medina (Danville, VA ’23); Bryce Adkins (Gretna, VA ’23); Aiden Dykstra (Ten Sleep, WY ’23); and John Wall (Mount Juliet, TN ’24). The boys dug deep and set a new team relay Personal Best by 1.53 seconds. Additionally, Sebastian Medina dropped 0.41 seconds to set a new 100 yard Freestyle and Aiden Dykstra unofficially dropped 4.96 seconds and swam for the first time in under 1 minute!

The team then headed to the local bowling alley, and the boys spent nearly 3 hours bowling and eating while the adults hung out! Obviously, it had been a while as they eventually had to set up the rails due to the number of gutter balls! There was a lot of laughter and quality memories being made. From there, the team made their way to The Pure Pasty Company in Vienna, VA. Mr. Bolz kindly treated the boys with English sausage rolls and an English chocolate easter egg. There was a lot of positive feedback about the new experience and the differences from one type of food to another depending on the country. The rest of the trip back flew by in a blur as the team had many in-depth and quality conversations across many diverse topics.

Overall, feedback from the guys was extremely positive. They thoroughly enjoyed the trip and are already talking about qualifying for next year!

Coach Weishaar would like to thank everyone for their support this year. She is looking forward to beginning again in the fall with our returnees and conditioning swimmers, and the winter for our competitive team.

College Acceptances On the Rise!

Our seniors in the Class of 2022 continue to receive acceptance letters from top colleges and universities across our nation. This amazing accomplishment is a credit to the hard work done by these students, as well as the excellent support they’ve received from their teachers and staff members like Ben Veshi (Director of College Counseling) and Morgan Tyree (School Counselor). Our current seniors are on track to continue our long-standing tradition of 100% college acceptance.

The College Counseling department at Hargrave continues to be a source of guidance and support as these boys move forward into the next phase of their lives. We congratulate all those who have been accepted and those who will soon be receiving good news!

Strengthening Faith

Spiritual Emphasis Week 2022 at Hargrave Military Academy is in the history books! What a wonderful and powerful week of both the word of God going forth and worship and praise of God going up! Thanks to the worship team of Cornerstone Church of Christ here in Chatham, Virginia being led by Robbie Stallard and the exciting Hip Hop performances of Chang3 from Virginia Beach, in addition to the Christian illusionist Bryan Drake from Mobile Alabama. The excitement and variety of these Christian artists and performers along with the gifted speaking of Bill Paige captured the attention and set the stage for what has been deemed by some cadets including the Battalion Commander (CLTC) A. Zinke as the “Best Spiritual Emphasis Week” of his 5 years at Hargrave! Special thanks to the Chapel Staff under the leadership of Captain Michael Silas, the Parent Council, FLIK Food services, and special thanks to Susan Bower (Bower House Bed and Breakfast) for being a phenomenal host to all of our guests!

Hargrave’s faith pillar is stronger today than it has been in many decades. Under the energetic leadership of Chaplain Michael Washington, we seek to create lifelong disciples of Jesus who live out their faith as leaders of character. In fact, faith is presented as the foundation of character development providing students an absolute moral center by which they can orient their lives.

Winter Fun Day

On Wednesday, February 23rd, the Corps of Cadets participated in our annual Winter Fun Day.  Winter Fun Day is a newer tradition at Hargrave that is scheduled at the halfway point between the Christmas and Spring Breaks. The day gives the Cadets an opportunity to foster camaraderie, enjoy the spirit of competition, and build esprit de corps.

This year the Battalion Leadership set the rules for inter-company competitions in water polo, dodgeball, and basketball.  Water polo was dominated by Alpha Company who went 3-0 and outscored opponents 3-1.  Dodgeball was much closer, but Alpha Company took that bracket win as well.  However, Charlie and Delta Companies who had finished right behind Alpha Company in the other two events found themselves as opponents in the final round of the basketball tournament.  Charlie Company defeated Delta Company in that high energy game and set up a scenario for a three-way tie between Alpha, Charlie, and Delta Companies.  C/LTC Zinke, the Battalion Commander, then made the call to break the tie with an impromptu tug o’ war bracket.

All of the Cadets fought hard for the promise of Buffalo Wild Wings for the overall winning Company, but there could only be one winner.  The overall winner of the Winter Fun Day was the Wolfpack (Alpha Company).

A huge thank you goes out to:
  • Flik Dining who served a picnic style BBQ lunch in the gym
  • Coach Alan Petty who helped facilitate the setup of the event
  • MSgt Tyler Selden who setup a DJ booth and provided music
  • Coach Amanda Weishaar who setup the pool and officiated the water polo matches
  • Coaches Austin Burnette and Isaac Dixon who officiated the basketball games
  • The facilities department who setup the gym for the event and lunch
  • Ms. Zaria Davis for photography of the event
  • The Battalion Staff who planned, coordinated, and executed the event

BEHIND THE WHEEL!

Hargrave families!

I wanted to take the time to reach out about a driver’s education course opportunity. We tentatively plan to host this course, geared towards Virginia drivers, April 18-29 from 6:30-8:30pm. The instructor works for the Safe Driving School of the Piedmont, and he will come to the school each weeknight over those two weeks in order to work with the cadets who sign up. The classroom portion of the course does not require a valid learner’s permit, however a learner’s permit is required for the driving portion (we are not currently offering the driving portion of the course). The class costs approximately $155 per cadet. They will not be able to miss more than two classes in order to pass, so please take into consideration athletic competition schedules. I am unable to speak to the validity of the course for non-Virginia residents.

If you are interested in signing your cadet up for the course, please let me know. I am getting initial numbers and then I will connect you individually with the driving school in order to arrange payment. Let me know if you have any questions. Have a great weekend!
