Chatham, VA — Post grad basketball was not the only sport getting the spotlight on the first day of the early signing period. Hargrave Military’s Cameron Giannini signed a scholarship to play baseball for Liberty University following this season.

“Liberty is a Division I school and I talked to the coach there briefly a couple of times and he is very excited about Cameron being there,” Hargrave Military baseball coach Scott Roach said.

Giannini brings the background to pitch at the Division I level, as the senior went 4-3 last year, racking up 67 strikeouts in 44 innings pitched, including a no-hitter against Liberty Christian Academy in which he struck out 15 batters.

Giannini was also able to swing the bat, hitting five home runs last season. He also drove in five runs against North Cross and came up a single short of the cycle.

“My time at Hargrave has really been a blessing. It’s a great environment to be a student and an athlete,” Giannini said.

“(The coaches at Liberty) said before that I’ll have a chance to go in right away and possibly pitch some and that’s my main focus up there.”

It will be a different look for Giannini as he transitions from being a shortstop, third baseman and pitcher to probably being a strong arm for the Flames.

“Cameron also plays a lot of showcase baseball — where he gets to play against some of the best talent in the country — when he’s not playing with us,” Roach said. “He’s definitely played against top-quality talent. I think he’s ready.”
