Hargrave offers swimming lessons to the community.
We will offer a free swim assessment the week before each session starts if the parent/guardian is unsure as to the child's swimming ability. Please contact the Aquatics Director to set up a date and time.
Please note, typical age to start swimming lessons is 4 years old and older. Some exceptions will be made for those aged 3 if they have the ability to comprehend verbal instruction, and can be in the water without an adult. Children not potty trained MUST wear swim diapers and NOT disposable diapers.
There will be a 1-2 week gap between the end of each 4-week session and the start of the next session. Please refer back to this page for further dates.
Please contact the Aquatics Director at 434-432-2681 for availability. To confirm group lessons:
NOTE: If you (or your child) is unable to attend the scheduled group lessons, the $10 non-refundable deposit will be transferred to the next available class if notice is given 48 hours BEFORE classes start.

Private swim lessons available for those who require a personally designed lesson plan. Some of the reasons for private lessons include: limited time due to commitments/restrictions; physical limitations; specific goal (e.g. triathlon, new strokes); fear of water; or being self conscious. Lessons are $15 for 30 minutes and are a one-on-one with an instructor. Lessons typically occur on the weekends during normal open hours. Please call to be placed on the waiting list and an instructor will call you back to set up a day and time.
Water aerobics are low-impact, high-energy aquatic exercises combining walking, jogging, dance moves and calisthenics, and are a lot like aerobic classes you take on dry land (right down to the motivating and fun music). The water creates a natural resistance which means every step is more challenging and helps tone muscles with less impact on the joints. It's an upbeat, energetic class that is sure to get you moving!
Modifications can be made to the exercises for those who require it. Just speak with our qualified instructor before class and she will incorporate those changes into the routine to ensure you are benefiting from the workout.
Classes are Mondays and Tuesdays 5:15–6:15 pm at the Onishi-Davenport Aquatic Center, 200 Military Drive, Chatham, VA.
Cost: 10-use punch card — $40 (does not expire); or $5 for one-time pass. Cards can be purchased at the Onishi-Davenport Aquatic Center.
