Hargrave Military Academy’s Postgraduate basketball team is scheduled to feature on an upcoming episode of CNN’s “Inside Man” with host Morgan Spurlock. The episode is scheduled for June 8, 2014 at 10 p.m. Eastern time.
Spurlock is known for getting directly involved with his stories. “Inside Man” and its production crew joined the Hargrave Postgraduate Basketball team February 25-28, 2014 and attempted to learn about every aspect of the nationally recognized program. Spurlock was even assigned as a guest coach for the February 28 first round game of the 2014 First Piedmont Corp Invitational. Hargrave defeated its opponent, Massanutten Military Academy, 113 to 91 in that round and eventually won the tournament.
“We are very excited about the opportunity for the world to see how we operate on a daily basis,” Coach A.W. Hamilton, Hargrave’s head postgraduate basketball coach, said. “I cannot say enough about the experience of working with Morgan Spurlock, and he’s undefeated as a (Hargrave) coach so he’s welcome back anytime.”
The episode’s main focus is future University of Tennessee freshman, Jabari McGhee. Morgan followed McGhee every step of the way through his rigorous daily routine, which started at 6 a.m. and concluded at 10 p.m. McGhee, who eventually landed in the SEC, was undecided at the time and provided an intriguing perspective on the process of one of the biggest decisions of his life.
“It’s was an honor to be followed by Morgan, and I think I may have a future in television if the basketball thing doesn’t work out.” McGhee said jokingly. “On a serious note, Morgan is a first class person and I can see why he’s been so successful for so long.”
McGhee had plenty of schools recruiting him because of his prowess on the court, but some were reluctant because he needed to improve his ACT score to qualify. Spurlock started the day with McGhee at formation early in the morning, attended his classes and ended the day with two hours of study hall.
“Hargrave is an incredibly impressive postgraduate program, one that puts as much of an emphasis on educating and cultivating the athletes into respectful young men as it does on growing them into elite ball players,” Spurlock said.
Spurlock also found time to give the pregame speech before the Tigers played in the opening game of the 2014 First Piedmont Invitational. As a guest coach, Coach Spurlock helped lead McGhee and the team to a spirited victory.Morgan Spurlock first became a household name when he starred in the documentary “Supersize Me,” in which he attempted to eat nothing but McDonald’s food for 30 days. He has since made six other documentaries and was the executive producer and star of the reality TV series “30 days.”
