The Hargrave Tigers took to the mat on Saturday December 6th, in the historic Davis Gym in the Cody Day Memorial tournament hosted at Hargrave. Due to some weather issues the tournament format was changed to a round robin tournament with Hargrave, Chatham High School, Martinsville High School, George Washington High School, and James River High School all making it through the snow to get to the event.
The first round saw the Tigers take on Martinsville High School. The Tigers were able to secure the first team victory of the season with a total score of 51 to 18. Hargrave had wins from Cadet Sam Meyers, Cadet Shaun Masaese, Cadet William Sackett, Cadet Charles Meyers, Cadet Levi Lentz, Cadet Jackson Baggett, Cadet Charles Rock, Cadet Marco Martin and Cadet TJ Hylton. For Cadets Sam Meyers, Shaun Masese and Jackson Baggett, these were their first High School wins.
Round two set up a match between Hargrave and James River High School. Hargrave wrestled to a decisive win with a final score of 48 to 15. The Tigers had match wins from Cadet Damian Silva(his first win), Cadet Shaun Masese (his first pin), Cadet William Sackett, Cadet Tristan Schwartz, Cadet Charles Meyers, Cadet Jackson Baggett, Cadet Marco Martin and Cadet TJ Hylton.
Round three brought on a quick change to the schedule as Tigers took on the Cavaliers of Chatham High School. The match started with Chatam taking a big lead with a forfeit win at 126 pounds and Pin win at 132 pounds. Cadet Sackett started off the winning streak with a win at 138 pounds. Cadet Tristan Schwartz picked up a win at 150 pounds, followed by win by Cadet Meyers with a pin at 157 pounds, Cadet Lentz with a win due to an illegal move on his opponent at 165, Cadet Jackson Baggett with a pin at 175, Cadet Charles Rock with a pin at 190, Cadet Marco Martin with a pin at 215, Cadet Hylton with a pin at 285 and Cadet Sam Meyers with a forfeit win at 113. In the end the final score was Hargrave 53 Chatham 24. This marked the first time the Hargrave Tigers wrestling team has beaten Chatham in six years.
Round four. Here we go: The Tigers took the mat against George Washington High School from Danville. Hargrave secured wins from Cadet Sackett (tech fall), Cadet Charles Meyers (pin), Cadet Charles Gaddy (pin), Cadet Jackson Baggett, Cadet Charles Rock (pin) Cadet Marco Martin (pin) and Cadet Damian Silva. In the end George Washington was able to secure the win on the having wrestlers at the three weight classes the Tigers were missing. The final score of the match was GW 42 Hargrave 40.
With George Washington, Chatham and Hargrave all tied with a 3 win and 1 loss record the decision on the tournament champions came down to the total number of pins. After counting all the matches it was determined that the Hargrave Tigers had the most pins on the day and were the Champions of the Cody Day Memorial Tournament.
