Strong Second Half leads Lacrosse to a Comeback Win Over the FUQUA Falcons

Matt Brawn

On Friday night, the Hargrave lacrosse Team took to the field to kick off the athletic events for the Homecoming weekend. The Tigers matched up against VISAA Division II opponent FUQUA School for a very rare and energetic game.

The seniors of the lacrosse program were honored prior to the game’s first face-off and given special recognition for all their hard work and efforts both on and off the field:

Elton Winslow
Jacob Hornberger
Nathaniel Weber
Trey Lee
Trey Barnes
Raines Wall
Luke Dewitt

The game was action packed and full of surprises from unexpected fireworks displays, former players on the bench, and multiple position changes due to unavailable players. The Tigers of and Falcons traded goals and defensive stands throughout the night. After an action packed first half, the Tigers found themselves in a 5-8 hole, but they would show the toughness, determination, and grit that has defined them all season long. This led to a come back in the second half with a renewed effort and a desire to leave it all out on the field. The Tigers came out of the gate in the second half with a couple of quick goals  before Fuqua added one of their own. The Tigers stayed vigilant and found the net 3 more times in the third to bring the game to even.

With the dawn of the fourth quarter approaching, the Tigers did what they have done most of the season…. closeout and finish! The fourth quarter was dominated by the Tigers as they built and extended a lead as the final minutes of the game ticked off the clock. Fuqua’s players never stopped competing as they found the net twice late in the fourth, but were only able to close within four goals of the Tigers, who despite being down by 3 at halftime, rallied back with 11 goals total in the second half.

The win was due to a great TEAM effort as every member got in the game and contributed in his own fashion. However, strong in-game performances by Paul Englander, Connor Rogers, Nicholas Thompson, Trey Lee, and Nathan Weber provided the driving force for the comeback victory.

The Tigers will be back in action at hom Monday, May 1st at 4:30 as they take on the Gryphons of New Covenant.
