Tiger Wrestlers Compete in Knights of the Round Table Tournament

The Hargrave wrestling team hit the road this weekend as they went to the Knights of the Round Table tournament at Cave Springs High School, in Cave Springs Virginia.

The Tigers first match was against a familiar foe James River High School.  The Tiger took to the mat with a slightly smaller line up this week due to some injury.   The match started with a forfeit win for Cadet Sam Meyers at 106 pounds.  Cadet Damian Silva took the mat at 113 and gave a good fight but in the end took a fall.  Hargrave had to forfeit the matches at 120 pounds and 126 pounds to  the wrestlers from James River. Cadet Sebastian Delgado then took to the match at 132 pounds and picked up his first ever varsity win and pin. At 138 pound Cadet William Sackett was awarded a forfeit victory.  At the 144 pound weight bracket both teams did not have a wrestler.  At 150 pounds Cadet Tristan Schwartz picked up another forfeit for the Tigers.  Cadet Charles Gaddy grabbed a pin win with a very nice roll into the pin.  Cadet Charles Rock at 190 pounds had a triple overtime match with Ashton Orange from James River with a final score of 18 to 14 in the favor of James River.  The Tigers picked up two more forfeit wins at 215 pounds and 285 pound class.  The final score of the match was Hargrave 48 James River 27.  Win one for the Tigers!

In the second match the grapplers from Hargrave took on the East Rockingham Eagles.  The match started with a series of four forfeits as the Tigers picked up wins at 106 and 113 pounds and the Eagles picked up the points at 120 and 126 pounds.  The Tigers suffered losses at 132 pounds, 138 pounds, 144 pounds and at 150 pounds to give the eagles a 24 point lead. Cadet   Gaddy put the stop to the winning streak with a pin win at 157 pounds.  The Tigers took two more pin losses at 165 and 175 as the Eagles were starting to pull away.  The Tigers split the last two matches with a pin win by Cadet Martin at 215 pounds and a pin loss at 285.  Final score East Rockingham 54 Hargrave 30.  

Round three of the round robin brought on the challenge from Lord Botetourt and the Cavailiers. This match also started with a series of four forfeits as the Tigers picked up wins at 106 and 113 pounds and the Cavaliers picked up the points at 120 pounds. Cadet Delgado at 132 pounds was the first match of the round and he put up a strong performance in a loss. Cadet Sackett picked up the forfeit win at 138 pounds.  At 144 pounds the Tigers gave another forfeit to the Cavaliers.  At 150 pounds Cadet Schwartz picked up the pin win in a commanding victory as he was winning 18 to 9 when he pinned his opponent.  Cadet Lentz hit a smooth reversal on his opponent and took him to his back to secure the pin at 165 pounds.  Cadet Jackson Baggett kept the winning rolling with a pin win at 175 pounds, Cadet Rock picked up a forfeit at 190 pounds Cadet Martin kept the train going with a pin win at 215 and Cadet Hylton picked up a forfeit win at 285.  The final score of the match was Hargrave 54 Lord Botetourt 24.  In an exposition match Cadet Mohammed Baker took the mat for his first ever wrestling match.  Way to go Mo!

Round four found Hargrave facing a smaller team in the William Fleming Colonels.  This match found Hargrave picking up 6 forfeits and giving up 2 forfeits.  Hargrave wrestlers secured wins at  106, 113, 132, 144, 165 and 215 with the forfeits.  Cadets Charles Gaddy and Cadet Jackson Bagett each picked up pin wins as Hargarve rolled to a 48 to 30 win.

Round five with a 3 win and 1 loss record found the Tigers fighting for second place in the bracket and a chance to compete for top three overall.  The opponent for this round was the hidden Valley Titans. This match again saw a few forfeits as both teams were feeling the effect of a long day of battle.  Hargrave gave forfeits at 106, 113, 120, 126 and 144 while receiving forfeits at 175 and 215.  Hargrave Cadet William Sackett was able to secure a pin win at 138 pounds and Cadet Charles Rock pinned his opponent at 190 pounds.  The final ally found Hargrave on the short end at  54 to 24.

With a third place finish in the bracket this gave the Tigers the opportunity to to move into the big gym and compete for a placement in the tournament.  In the placement round the opponent would be Heritage High School from Lynchburg.   Heritage came at the Tigers with a full 14 wrestler roster and quickly took a lead with a forfeit at 106, a pin win at 113 and forfeits at 120, 126, 144 and 165. The Tigers were able to pick up pin fall wins from Cadet Willaim Sackett at 138 pounds, Cadet Jackson Baggett at 175 pounds and Cadet Tj Hyton at 285 pounds. Unfortunately the Tigers fell to the Pioneers 66 to 18.  

The Tigers were able to finish the day with a 3 win and 3 loss record and a sixth place finish out of twelve teams in the tournament.
