The Varsity Baseball team traveled to Altavista on Wednesday for a preseason scrimmage against the Colonels. With both teams focused on getting all players into the game and trying out multiple positions — some for the first time — the score was not kept. For our first live action of the season, we had quite a bit of success and ended the day with a positive outlook heading into the start of the regular season.
Swinging with Confidence
Our Tigers started the game strong at the plate with a couple of walks. Isaac Brown then connected for what everyone thought was a home run, bouncing the ball off the center field fence for an RBI that scored Miles Rountrey. Elisha Dixon followed up with an RBI line drive to center field. Miles once again used his speed on the bases to our advantage, finishing the day with four stolen bases.
Defense Steps Up
The Tigers’ defense came ready to play as well, committing only one error on the day. Callen Matejka made a highlight-reel-worthy catch at first base to end an inning, catching a pop-up in foul territory as he stretched over and collided with the fence while securing the ball in his glove.
Elisha Dixon, in his first-ever appearance on the mound, pitched a shutout inning despite tired legs after catching four innings prior to stepping onto the mound. Other notable defensive performances came from Zion Hicks at third base, along with Charlie Wall and Miles Rountrey in the outfield.
Looking Ahead
All of our players have been focused and improving each day since the start of practice, and their effort showed on Wednesday night in Altavista.
Tigers Baseball opens the regular season on March 24 at home against North Cross at 4:30 PM. Come out and support your Tigers!
