Tigers Open Season with Third Place Finish

Hargrave Military Academy opened up the 2018-2019 season at the 20th Annual Dale Travis Invitational Tournament, hosted by Trinity Episcopal School in Richmond, Virginia. The Tigers went 1-1, as they fell to The Carmel School on Friday afternoon and turned around to defeat Amelia County High School on Saturday, earning a third place finish in the event.

Game Recap: The Carmel School

In the season opener, the Tigers battled for most of the game but couldn’t come back from a tough second quarter. After a back and forth start to the game, Hargrave found themselves trailing 14-13 after the first quarter. Senior Wade Thomas, III paced the Tigers in the opening stanza as he canned three three-pointers. With the score knotted up at 19 apiece, The Carmel School went on a 26-9 run to end the half, leaving the Tigers with a 17 point halftime deficit. The third quarter was nip and tuck but Hargrave continued to battle even though they couldn’t find a way to cut into The Carmel School lead. A quick 7-0 fourth quarter run by the Tigers cut the lead to 74-64 but that was all that this group could muster as they ultimately fell 78-66.

Game Recap: Amelia County High School

In the consolation game of the 20th Annual Dale Travis Invitational Tournament, the Tigers jumped out to an early lead against Amelia County High School and never looked back. An early three pointer from Nathan Kania ’20 gave Hargrave a 3-0 lead and the Tigers never trailed at any point during the game. A stalwart defensive effort led the Tigers to force 30 turnovers and put together 35 deflections including 5 blocked shots. It was a complete team effort as all 11 Tigers that dressed were able to play as Hargrave routed Amelia County High School 62-24, claiming a third place finish in the event and earning their first win of the season. Matthew Brown, Jr. ’19 was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Tigers will be back in action on Wednesday evening as they face off against rival, North Cross, in Walter Davis Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:45 PM.
