Hargrave 6 – Roanoke Valley 2
Captains Josh Splinter and Scott Dinius combined for three goals and three assists, on Tuesday, as they led their Tigers to a 6-2 performance over the Eagles of Roanoke Valley.
On a sloppy, muddy, and puddle ridden field the Tigers needed a win to keep their hopes alive for a 2nd place finish in the VIC Southern Division of the regular season. Though, despite the trecherous field conditions the Tigers found numerous opportunities in front of the Eagle’s goal while attempting 21 shots on the evening.
Forward JD Skinner opened the scoring for the Tigers 13 minutes into the half as Splinter and forward Dong Myung Eun combined to record the helper. Six minutes later Eun would record his second assist of the match as he linked up with Dinius, recording his first of two assists on the day, on a Tony Cain goal to give the Tigers the 2-0 advantage. Ten minutes before the closing first-half whistle junior midfielder Mike Badolato recorded his 16th goal of the season after he finished off a penalty kick won by Eun inside the Eagle’s box.
As the second half begun the Tigers picked up right where they left off putting the contest away early. Seven minutes into the half Dinius found the net for the Tigers on an unassisted attack. Then with less than 20 minutes remaining in the game Splinter added his first of two goals on another penalty kick for the Tigers to extend the Hargrave lead to 5-0. Though, four minutes later goalkeeper Nathan Bloom would be denied the clean sheet, after another superb performance in net for the Tigers, as the Eagles were awarded a penalty kick of their own. With the comfortable lead still well in hand less than five minutes later Splinter would record his second goal of the evening after linking up with Dinius from a lofted ball off of a free-kick just inside the Eagles defensive third. Although, muddy field conditions hindered the Tiger defense late in the second half as the Eagles recorded another moments before the closing whistle.
With the win the Tigers move to 8-2-2 in conference play.
