The Hargrave men’s swimming team swam to a second place finish at the ODAC High School Classic on Saturday. The 26-team field included the nation’s 6th best team, two state championship teams, two second place state championship teams, and the meet’s defending champions.
Hargrave was lead by 5th year senior Mike Miller, who won the 50 Free and finished 3rd in the 100 Free. Mike was closely followed by Andrew Hetzner, who won the 200 Free and finished 4th in the 500 Free. Also by Patrick Martelli, who won the 100 Fly and finished 5th in the 200 IM. James Eu scored a 9th place finish in the 200 IM and 11th in the 500 Free. Jacob Dole had an 8th place finish in the 100 Free and 14th in the 100 Back. Phillip Sgrignoli had a 13th place finish in the 100 Fly and 16th place in the 100 Breast. Mike Wheeler had a 15th place finish in the 100 Backstroke. Andrew Duwell had a 9th place finish in the 100 Breast.
Also scoring in the meet were Clark Sprinkle 6th in Diving and Josh Flage 14th in the 200 Free. The Hargrave relay teams also did very well scoring a 3rd and 11th place finish in the 200 Medley Relay, a 2nd place finish in the 200 Free Relay and a 1st and 10th place finish in the 400 Free Relay.
The 400 Free Relay team, which won Hargrave’s fourth event in the meet, swam the High School All-American cut. So, please join me in congratulating Andrew Hetzner, Patrick Martelli, Jacob Dole, and Mike Miller in becoming High School All-American Honorable Mention swimmers. First place teams will not be known until after the season’s last meet when all the times are submitted. The fastest 40 teams in the nation will become 1st High School All-Americans. The remainder will be Honorable Mention All-American. This early achievement gives these boys the rest of the season to improve on their time, giving it their best shot to make a 1st place team. Good luck to them.
Also this weekend Andrew Hetzner swam his second High School All-American individual cut in the 100 Backstroke. Andrew now has the chance to be named an All-American in three different events. This would be the 200 Free, 100 Back and 400 Free Relay. Great job, Andrew.
The men will be back in action at Hargrave on the 11th as they play host to Fishburne Military School. If you get a chance, please come watch them swim.
