Military Ball Parent & Guest FAQ
What is the Military Ball?
The Hargrave Military Academy Military Ball is a time-honored tradition held each spring to celebrate our upperclassmen. This prestigious evening is reserved for Juniors, Seniors, and Postgraduates. Parents attending for the designated photo opportunity are given a glimpse into this sacred tradition, but the evening itself is dedicated to our cadets.
Who may attend?
- Cadets: Only Juniors, Seniors, and Postgraduates are eligible to attend the Military Ball.
- Seniors: All Senior Officers are required to attend and must bring a date.
- Guests/Dates: Each attending cadet may invite one guest/date.
- Parents: Parents are welcome for photos prior to the start of the Ball. Due to space limitations, attendance inside the venue is strictly limited to cadets, their official guests, and invited faculty/staff.
When and where is the Military Ball held?
- Date: Saturday, April 11
- Location: Atkinson Barn, 777 Atkinson Farm Road, Danville, VA 24540
- Times: Arrival, photo opportunity, and start times will be announced closer to the event.
What is the dress code?
Strict dress guidelines are provided to ensure the dignity and tradition of this formal event.
- Cadets: Military dress uniform as directed by the Commandant
- Guests/Dates: Formal evening attire (View detailed dress code requirements)
- Parents (photo opportunity only): Business or church attire is appropriate
Is there a cost for parents?
Yes. Due to limited space, parents attending the pre-Ball photo opportunity are asked to limit the number of attendees. A ticket fee of $10 per family is required. Payment may be made through the Academy’s online portal (link will be provided).
What are the expectations for parents attending the photo session?
Parents are asked to:
- Respect the posted arrival and departure times
- Limit the number of family attendees to allow space for all
- Dress appropriately and honor the formality of the occasion
- Enjoy the opportunity without disrupting the event’s focus on our cadets
What are the transportation arrangements for cadets and guests?
- Hargrave’s Transportation Department will provide transportation to and from the venue
- Alternative arrangements may be requested in advance through the Military Department
Will there be overnight passes or checkouts?
Yes. Information about overnight passes and cadet checkouts will be communicated by the Commandant’s Office in advance of the event.
