Mr. Alan Petty

Student Activities, Head National HS Basketball Coach

Alan Petty serves as the Student Activities Director and Head Varsity Basketball Coach at Hargrave Military Academy. Since taking over the varsity basketball program, Coach Petty has helped lead the Tigers through one of the most competitive and consistent stretches in recent program history.

During his time as head coach, Petty has compiled 101 wins, making him the winningest varsity basketball coach at Hargrave since 1981. Under his leadership, the Tigers have made multiple VISAA state tournament appearances, including three Final Four appearances and an Elite Eight appearance. Hargrave also finished tied for first in the conference during the 2022-23 season and reached the conference tournament finals that same year.

Most recently, Hargrave was invited to compete in The Grind Session Power Conference, one of the premier national platforms in high school basketball. This invitation provides Hargrave student-athletes with the opportunity to compete against nationally recognized programs, gain exposure in front of college coaches and media, and strengthen the school’s position as a destination for serious student-athletes seeking both structure and high-level competition.

In addition to his work on the court, Coach Petty plays a major role in campus life as Hargrave’s Student Activities Director. He is committed to creating meaningful opportunities for cadets to grow through competition, leadership, discipline, and community engagement.

Before joining Hargrave, Petty established himself as a respected figure in the local basketball community through his work with the Warriors Travel Basketball organization, helping provide opportunities for rising basketball players throughout Pittsylvania County and Southern Virginia.

Coach Petty believes Hargrave provides young men with a unique environment to grow academically, athletically, spiritually, and personally.

"Hargrave provides young men with the structure, resources, and opportunities to reach their full potential without limitations."
