Major Wuensche graduated from the University of Houston in 1998 and was commissioned into the US Army as a Second Lieutenant in the Field Artillery.
His first assignment was to Fort Carson, Colorado, where he served as a Fire Support Officer, Fire Direction Officer, and the Reconnaissance/Survey Officer for 3rd Battalion, 29th Field Artillery. In 2003 he was assigned to 1st Battalion, 15th Field Artillery at Camp Casey, Republic of Korea, as the Battalion S-2.
On return to the United States in 2004, he was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 18th Field Artillery where he was the battalion Operations Officer, and later took command of Alpha Battery in 2005. From there he was deployed on Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2006 to be the Intelligence Officer for the Multi-National Force – Iraq (MNF-I) Information Operations Task Force (IOTF).
In 2007 he was assigned to the 75th Fires Brigade at Fort Sill, Oklahoma as the Brigade S-4, and later transferred to the Field Artillery School for two years as a Small Group Instructor in the Field Artillery Captain’s Career Course.
In 2010 he joined the 10th Mountain Division for its deployment to Afghanistan as the Deputy Fire Support Coordinator. On redeployment he became the 1st Brigade Fire Support Officer, the S-3 for 3rd Battalion, 6th Field Artillery, and commanded a Security Force Advisor and Assistance Team deployed to Afghanistan in 2013.
On redeployment he served briefly as Division Chief of Training before transfer to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas to be an Observer/Trainer for the Mission Command Training Program.
He is a graduate of the US Army Airborne School, Field Artillery Basic and Captain’s Career Course, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, and the Command and General Staff College. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and the Combat Action Badge.
After retirement from the US Army in 2016, MAJ Wuensche became a historian for the Army University Press, conducting staff rides for the US Army, DoD and Joint agencies, the US Army Reserve, the Army National Guard, and the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). He is the author or co-author of six staff rides, and has provided research for Army University Press Films. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in military history from Norwich University.
