Hargrave’s small classes are designed to prepare cadets for college work. But our experience has shown that coursework needs to be tailored to the maturity, talents, and interests of cadets. Accordingly, we have continued to utilize a series of standard level college-preparatory courses (that use the 4.0 grade point scale) as well as a series of advanced study college-preparatory courses (designated Honors, AP, and Dual Enrollment). The latter use a weighted grade-point scale in acknowledgement of the extra challenges and as encouragement for cadets to take the more difficult path.

Dual Enrollment and AP Courses
Dual Enrollment
Hargrave Military Academy is partnered with Richard Bland College of William and Mary and Liberty University for its Dual Enrollment and Independent Study programs. These partnerships allow Hargrave upperclassmen and post graduates the ability to take college-level courses for simultaneous college and high school credits during their time at Hargrave.
Dual enrollment courses at Hargrave are taught by qualified Richard Bland College of William and Mary adjunct faculty members. Cadets pre-qualify for the Dual Enrollment option by their demonstrated academic performance and by the recommendation of their instructor. Dual enrollment offers participating Cadets an excellent start on their college education.
- ENGL 101 — Writing and Research, 3 credit hours
- ENGL 102 — Introduction to Literary Genres, 3 credit hours
- CHEM 101/L — General Chemistry I with Lab, 4 credit hours
- CHEM 102/L — General Chemistry II with Lab, 4 credit hours
Advanced Placement
Advanced Placement courses are another option for Hargrave Cadets. AP courses give Cadets the experience of taking college-level courses while earning high school credit. Successful completion of the AP Exam may result in the awarding of college credits. Hargrave’s current AP course offerings include the following:
- AP Calculus AB
- AP Physics I
- AP United States History
- AP Chemistry
