Balanced Scoring Propels Tigers to Victory

The Hargrave Tigers Post Graduate Basketball team continued their hot start with two victories over the weekend. Hargrave defeated Ridgeview Prep (146-54) on Friday evening and took down Aim High Academy (144-94) on Saturday. The Tigers are now 4-0 on the season.

The Tigers continued to impress with their balanced scoring as they torched the historic Walter Davis Gymnasium nets to the tune of 146 points on Friday evening in their 92 point victory over Ridgeview Prep. Hargrave was paced by 7 players in double figures, including Will Felton (Raleigh, NC) and Jackie Johnson (Wichita, KS), who both poured in 20+ points. The Tigers connected on 9 three pointers and had 30 assists as a team. The frenetic defensive pressure paid dividends for Hargrave as they accumulated 26 steals en route to Friday evening’s convincing victory. In addition to Felton and Johnson, the Tigers got strong performances from guards Jordan Battle (Chesapeake, VA) and Grayson Honaker (Honaker, VA) as the duo combined for 34 points and 13 rebounds, while IJ Ezuma (Raleigh, NC) and Matt Nunez (Newport News, VA) chipped in a combined 26 points, 15 rebounds, and 4 blocks.

The Tigers ended up with a 144-94 victory over Aim High Academy but it wasn’t a cake-walk. Hargrave got down early after some sloppy play but an early timeout from Head Coach, Thomas Messinger, sparked a crucial 12-0 run to give the Tigers a lead that they would never relinquish. Jackie Johnson (Wichita, KS) led the Tigers with 31 points on an outstanding 11-14 shooting performance. Johnson also chipped in 8 of Hargrave’s 31 assists and 3 of Hargrave’s 19 steals. The Tigers knocked in 12 three pointers as well and ended up with eight players in double figures. Will Felton (Raleigh, NC) poured in a 10 points, 11 rebound double-double while his frontcourt mate, IJ Ezuma (Raleigh, NC) added 14 points and 7 rebounds of his own. The backcourt combination of Jordan Battle (Chesapeake, VA) and Tyler Beard (Chicago, IL) proved to be key performers as well, as Battle produced 22 points, 5 steals, and 4 rebounds while Beard contributed 16 points, 5 assists, and 3 steals to the Tigers’ victory.

The Tigers are back in action this weekend as they head to Willoughby, Ohio for the Midwest Prep Showcase. Hargrave takes on host school International Sports Academy on Friday November 20th (6:00 PM tip-off) and face off with rival Fork Union Military Academy on Saturday November 21st (12:00 PM tip-off) before heading into the Thanksgiving break.
