Matt Brawn

The Varsity Lacrosse team took to the field for the first time in the 2011-2012 season as they traveled to Roanoke Catholic to take on the Celtics. The first half was a bit rough for the Tigers as many players who were new to the game of lacrosse where trying to fully adjust to the tempo and style of the game. Roanoke Catholic Jumped out to a quick 6 to 0 lead at half. However the Tigers where not without their success as they had 23 shots 14 shots on net but where unable to put many of them on target.

The second half of play so a much more relaxed tiger squad, again the Tigers did not lack the effort of getting shots on goal as they tallied 10 shots in the third quarter and another 11 in the final quarter. The Celtic would add 4 more goals to their lead in the third quarter to take a 10-0 advantage. In the final stanza of play the tigers would go on a 5 goal run and finish with both a dominating defensive game and offensive pressure cooker at the other end of the field.

Defensively the Tigers where slow to start but by the second half they were establishing the physical dominance that the coaching staff had expected all pre-season. Defensive standouts for the Tigers where goalie Adrian Roman who recorded 12 saves on the day, Wing defenders Christian Mitchell, Irvin Huggins and Zak King all had solid second half performances as well.

Offensive standouts for the Tigers where midfielder Tobi Bomisaiye who recorded two goals in under a minute to begin the finishing effort by the offense. Freshman Griffin Jennings and Sophomore Michael Sullivan would also tally points in the tigers closing efforts of the game. Veteran attacker Steele Burkett anchored the offense all game long providing a pair of goals and solid leadership in sticking to the game plan.
