Fall 2004 PG Football vs. Averett University JV

Hargrave Handles Averett University
Tigers run their way to 61-3 Victory

A strong defense and potent run game helped lead the Hargrave Military Academy Post Graduates to a 61-3 win over the Averett University junior varsity team on Sunday. On a day when Hurricane Frances was wreaking havoc on the Florida coast, a Florida native was doing the same to the Averett defense. Chubb Small rushed for 152 yards and two scores on only eight carries. Fellow running back Andre Brown complimented Small in the backfield by gaining 132 yards with three touchdowns.

For the second straight week Robert Prunty’s defense was solid in the first half, while the Tiger offense was slow to get things rolling. Two turnovers by the PG offense in the first quarter put the defense in a tight spot. The defense stood tough though. The scoring began when defensive end Willie Young wrapped up Averett’s quarterback deep in their own territory forcing a fumble. Samuel Frist was in the right place at the right time, falling on the fumble in the end zone for the first score of the game. A Terry Mitchell to Brandon Lang 25 yard touchdown pass added to the Frist score gave HMA a 14-0 lead going into the second quarter.

The Tiger offense woke up in a major way in the second quarter. Wide receiver Bruce Francis did not catch a ball, but stepped up on two wide receiver handoffs rushing for 50 yards in the second quarter. It was Brown though, who took control of the game with two touchdowns before the half. Lang also had some fun by catching his second score of the day from quarterback Aubrey Norris from 15 yards out.

The second half proved to be much of the same. Running back Curtis Brinkley showed some moves of his own. Brinkley rushed for some tough yards and came up with some key third down conversions to keep drives going for the Tigers in the third quarter. The PG’s also attacked modestly through the air. Terry Mitchell hit Victor D’Arrigo for a 25-yard gain on third down. Then it was Norris hitting Deanco Oliver for a 33-yard strike to move the chains.

The forth quarter was the Chubb Small show. Small rushed for 135 of his 153 yards in the final period, including two scores. The final score came with :50 seconds remaining when Small cut a run back, breaking tackles, for a 75 yard scamper. Chris Allison connected with Jason Burton for a 36 yard scoring bomb to put the game out of reach. Jonathan Dorchak did what was expected of him by hitting eight extra points on the day.

The Tigers (2-0) have a short week ahead of them. Hargrave will travel to West Point, NY for a Friday game with the United States Military Academy. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
