Hargrave falters versus tough East Carolina team

Young Tiger team can’t match up to experienced Pirates

Greenville, NC

The Hargrave Military Academy Post Graduates lost a tight game versus the East Carolina University junior varsity team on Tuesday night in Dowdy Ficklin Stadium in Greenville. The very young Tigers could not match up against a group of juniors and sophomores who were more developed and experienced.

The Tigers started off the scoring in the first quarter when Greenville native Andre Brown squirted through the line to block a Pirate punt. Hargrave fell on the ball, giving the offense first and ten at the ECU 15 yard line. It would take the PG’s just three plays to score when Brown carried the ball in from 2 yards away to give HMA a 7-0 early lead.

That score would not hold up for long though. ECU did not take much time to move the ball down the field and into the end zone. On third down and long the Pirates used a double pass to their wide receiver from 50 yards out to cut the lead to 7-6. The Tiger offense could not get much going in the first half and ECU scored another touchdown late in the second quarter to give them a 13-7 lead going into the half.

The second half proved to be much of the same for Hargrave. Playing by High School rules at the request of the Pirates, the PG’s had only two 12-minute quarters to try to get things going and that just did not happen. The Tigers defense held tough by forcing an interception by Don Hargrodder late in the second half, but a stalled drive on the 50-yard line left HMA without time to make up the deficit. ECU then drove the length of the field to score a late touchdown to give them a 19-7 lead and the victory.

The Tigers will be back in action on Friday October 22nd when they travel to Morgantown, WV to take on nationally ranked West Virginia. Game time is slated for 2:00.
