Fall 2004 PG Football vs. U.S. Naval Academy JV

PG football falls to Navy

Turnovers destroy Tigers

Annapolis, MD- Hargrave Military Academy found itself in uncharted waters on Friday when they visited the historic United States Naval Academy to take on the Midshipmen. The Tigers went in with an upset in mind, but it was not meant to be as the PG’s fell 20-9 to Navy.

Six turnovers by the Hargrave offense cost them 14 points and that is all that the Midshipmen needed. Navy got on the board first with 10:00 left in the first quarter when they took the ball in from 1 yard out to go up 7-0. It did not take the Tigers long to answer. Curtis Brinkley took the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown to knot the game at 7-7. After a number of swapped punts Navy found their way into the end zone again to go up 14-7 in the second quarter. After a Hargrave drive stalled at the 50, Victor D’Arrigo punted a perfect ball down inside the 5-yard line to pin the Midshipmen back deep. The Tiger defense flexed their muscles as they gang tackled the Navy running back in the end zone leading to a safety and a cut in the lead at 14-9.

The Tigers came out in the second half and just could not get things going. The offense struggled with turnovers for most of the half, while the defense remained dominant. Navy had the ball first and goal from the 3-yard line and the Tiger defense stood tall. After three failures to reach pay dirt, Navy went to the air and was denied on fourth down when Brandon Anderson went up and intercepted the pass in the end zone. Brandon Lang and John Hall had some big catches offensively in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome the miscues. With just 3:32 left in the fourth quarter Navy scored the go ahead touchdown to take the lead at 20-9 and that is where the game ended.

Hargrave will be back in action on Friday November 5th as Fork Union Military Academy visits Chatham, VA for the only home game of the year for the PG’s. Everyone is encouraged to attend. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 PM on the campus of Hargrave Military Academy.
