Fall 2007 Player of the Week – (Updated 3-12-2008)

Hargrave’s Player of the Week has been established by Coach Matt Holdren to recognize weekly performance with the 2007 Hargrave varsity fall soccer players.

Player of the Week – Scott Dinus – Senior Midfielder
Week of Oct 22 – Oct 28, 2007
This week marked the beginning of the VIC conference playoffs for the Tigers where they were seeded fourth, and faced with the daunting task of playing the first seeded and third ranked team in the state, Eastern Mennonite on Oct 23rd. Dinius, backed by an overall fantastic team effort, scored both goals for the Tigers in overtime to upset the Flames in sudden death triple overtime, 2-1. Unfortunately, the Tigers run fell short on Oct 26th where they were knocked out by North Cross, 2-1. Dinius also added an assist on the Tiger’s only goal in the match. Dinius finishes the season with 20 goals and 12 assists for 52 points, leading all three categories amongst Hargrave players.

Honorable Mention – Brad Faught – Junior Goalkeeper
Week of Oct 22 – Oct 28, 2007
On Oct 23rd against Eastern Mennonite, Faught played beyond superbly in net for the Tigers as he recorded 12 total saves against the top seeded Eastern Mennonite. Faught denied opportunity after opportunity on 22 shots from Mennonite, and through several diving denials helped take the game to overtime and give his team the opportunity to win the match. On Oct 26th against North Cross, Faught also added three saves on 11 shots from the opponent.

Player of the Week – Mike Dalpini – Junior Defender
Week of Oct 15 – Oct 21, 2007
In the Tigers only match-up this week against Holy Cross, Dalpini recorded two goals and one assist on just two total shots. Dalpini began each half at the defensive midfield position, but was moved to a left wing spot in the final moments of each half. Dalpini made good on the switch recording both his goals, and the game winner on his first tally. Dalpini also added an assist on the Tiger’s first goal.

Honorable Mention – Scott Dinius – Senior Midfielder; Tian Yang – Senior Midfielder; Austin Koeneman – Senior Defender
Week of Oct 15 – Oct 21, 2007
On Oct 18th against Holy Cross Dinius, Yang, and Koeneman were the only other three to record points on the day behind Dalpini. Dinius finished the afternoon with a two goal, one assist output on six total shots to lead all shooters. Yang recorded a game high three assists out of the midfield while Koeneman added two assists of his own from a defensive marking back position. All three combined for six total assists in the game.

Player of the Week – Edwin Choi – Junior Forward
Week of Oct 8 – Oct 14, 2007
Choi scored the only goal for the Tigers this week on Oct 9th against Carlisle with a late tally to send the conference match-up into overtime where the Tigers unfortunately lost in the final seconds 2-1. In the Carlisle game Choi led all Hargrave shooters with six shots and three shots on goal.

Honorable Mention – Brad Faught – Junior Goalkeeper
Week of Oct 8 – Oct 14, 2007
On Oct 9th against Carlisle Faught finished the match with nine saves on 16 shots from the opponent. Despite the loss Faught played superbly in net turning away several good opportunities, and helped keep the Tigers alive to send the match into overtime. Faught added an additional save against North Cross on Oct 12th.

Player of the Week – Scott Dinius – Senior Midfielder
Week of Oct. 1 – Oct. 7, 2007
Dinius scored six of the Tiger’s seven goals this week including a three goal output against Fork Union on Oct 2nd in a 3-3 final recording his second hat-trick of the season; a game in which Dinius scored the game tying goal with just over 12 minutes to play. Dinius went on to score the Tiger’s only two goals against Liberty Christian on Oct 4th while recording a goal and an assist against Virginia Episcopal on Oct 6th. Dinius’ six goals and one assist this week for 13 points ties his total point output from the previous week of Sep 24th – Sep 30th where he recorded four goals and five helpers to lead the Tigers; his 16 goals and nine assists for 41 points this season leads all players in all of the former categories.

Honorable Mention – Mike Dalpini – Junior Defender
Week of Oct. 1 – Oct. 7, 2007
Dalpini picked up two assists this week in a strong effort out of the back for the Tigers, recording one helper against Fork Union on Oct 2nd and adding another against Virginia Episcopal on Oct 6th. Dalpini, more accustomed and fitted to the midfield area, has been restricted to playing more of a defensive role for the Tigers to fill in some loose ends. During is defensive tenure in all 14 games this season Dalpini has recorded a goal and three assists.

Player of the Week – Scott Dinius – Senior Midfielder
Week of Sept. 24 – Sept. 30, 2007
In three games this week Dinius was the most influential player offensively for Hargrave as he recorded a total of four goals and five assists, including two game winners to help lead the Tigers to three straight wins. Dinius recorded a point in each match including a three goal, two assist performance against Holy Cross on Sep 25th, which included the game winning goal in overtime from the penalty marker, a one goal and one assist performance in a 3-0 effort against Timberlake on Sep 27th, and, finally, grabbed one helper against Notre Dame Academy on Sep 29th in a 2-0 win for the Tigers.

Player of the Week – Chris Bowser – Senior Forward
Week of Sept. 17 – Sept. 23, 2007
Despite a losing effort against Roanoke Valley on Sep 20th, Bowser came on as a substitute and jump started the Hargrave attack as he put all three of his shot attempts on target, and in the process scored the Tiger’s first goal of the game in the 71st minute. In six games played this season Bowser has recorded a total of only five shots, but has been on target with every attempt; he was four of four this week which included his three shots against Roanoke Valley and one shot attempt against Carlisle on Sep 17th. Bowser has two goals and one assist this season, and may soon earn a starting position for the Tigers due to his work ethic on the field of play.

Honorable Mention – Scott Dinius – Senior Midfielder
Week of Sept. 17 – Sept. 23, 2007
Dinius scored the only other goal for the Tigers this week which came on a late penalty kick against Roanoke Valley on Sep 20th. The senior captain was the main offensive threat for the Tigers this week as he recorded ten total shots in the two games against Roanoke Valley and Carlisle. Dinius continues to lead the team in points with 16, and in goals with six; he is tied for second in assists with four.

Player of the Week – Charles Field – Senior Defender
Week of Sept. 10 – Sept. 16, 2007
In four games in three days Field played all 330 minutes on the field on the defensive end for the Tigers. On Sep. 13th he led the Tiger defense to a 7-0 shutout of Roanoke Catholic while only giving up five total shots on goal. Despite the Tigers going 0-3 during the Menno Classic Tournament in Harrisonburg, VA the defensive unit led by Field played superbly giving up one goal to the 17th ranked team in the state, and holding the ninth ranked team in the state to only one goal and forcing penalty kicks despite spending most of the time on the defensive end. Field was also the only Hargrave player to be named to the Menno All-Tournament Team.

Honorable Mention – Tiger Defense
Week of Sept. 10 – Sept. 16, 2007

Senior defenders Charles Field and Austin Koeneman along with junior defender Mike Dalpini, and senior goalkeeper Nathan Bloom led the Tigers to a 7-0 win over Roanoke Catholic on Sep. 13th, and then were faced with the daunting task of playing defense against the #4, #9, & #17 ranked teams in the state at the Menno Classic in Harrisonburg, VA on the 14th & 15th. These four young men saw every minute on the field, and at numerous intervals were faced with constant pressure accompanied by fatiguing conditions after four games in three days. Koeneman and Dalpini, normally midfielders, have been forced into a defensive position for the Tigers, and played superbly on the defensive wings along with Field at the sweeper position. Despite being clearly out shot by #9 ranked Paul VI 24-4 the defense, along with 12 saves from Bloom in net, was able to force PVI into penalty kicks. Bloom finished the week (4 games) seeing 310 minutes in net, averaging 1.5 goals against per match, finished with 31 saves good for 7.6 on average per game, and a save percentage of .838.

Player of the Week – Scott Dinius – Senior Midfielder
Week of Sept. 3 – Sept. 9, 2007
Dinius recorded two goals and two assists on this week in the Tigers first two season opening games to lead all scorers in goals and points. Despite a 2-3 loss to open the season to Liberty Christian on Sept. 4th the Senior Captain helped lead his Tigers back from a three goal deficit with a goal and an assist in the second half. Dinius also recorded a goal and an assist against Westover Christian on Sept. 7th on the Tiger’s way to an 8-0 win.

Honorable Mention – Kenny Mattimore – Junior Midfielder
Week of Sept. 3 – Sept. 9, 2007
Mattimore added a goal and three assists in his first two opening matches including two assists on Sept. 4 against Liberty Christian, and one goal and one assist against Westover Christian on Sept. 7. The Junior Midfielder leads the team in assists with three.
