Fall 2009 PG Football vs. ‘The Military Bowl’ – Walter Reed

Hargrave 56 – Walter Reed 0

It was a banner day for the Hargrave PG Football Team as they played their most complete game of the season. The Tigers went up 29-0 after the first quarter, and cruised the rest of the way, en route to a 56-0 win over the Walter Reed Warriors.

Offensively, the Tigers executed with precision and rarely had a drive that lasted more than 6 plays. On the second play of the game, Quarterback Evan Ingram hit Wide Receiver Deon Long down the right sideline for a 65 yard score. Later in the quarter, the Tigers’ Tahron Goods, and Jerrell Rhodes each rushed for a touchdown, putting Hargrave up 21-0. Not to be satisfied, the Tigers took a punt return for a score, as Deon Long fielded the punt down the middle, burst outside, and scampered 71 yards for the touchdown.

After the first quarter, the Tigers ran the ball effectively as Goods’ ran for yet another score, this time from 18 yards out, and Alex Owah scored on the second play of a drive, from 72 yards away. All in all, the Tigers ran 35 times for 376 yards, and kept the clock moving much of the second half.

Wide Receivers Preston Cleckley, Jabari Carr, and Hakeem Haynie each had two catches, and each blocked well on the perimeter to spring numerous long runs by the running backs.

Along the offensive line, there were numerous standouts. Tom Pizzurro, Winston Hill, and Sawyer Russell all stood out, as well as Dan Polaski, Harry Foster, Ryan Grimes and Paul Thompson. Robert Fitzgerald also played well.

Defensively, the Tigers pitched their first shutout of the season. They were active all game long and forced three Warrior turnovers. Along the defensive line, Justin Kee, Derek Peyton, and Cole Alexander all played very well. Kee finished with 5 tackles, 3 for loss, and 1 sack. Also, Ego Ferguson Jr played well yet again, finishing with 3 tackles for loss and 2 sacks in limited playing time (1 quarter of play). Amidst the linebacking corps, Jimmie Lewis and Trevor Black played well, as did Jules Forney. Outside linebacker Jimmy O’Grady finished with 10 tackles, and was all over the football field in his best game to date. He intercepted a pass and returned it for a score, but the play was called back on a phantom roughing the passer call.

In the secondary, Dylan Farrington intercepted his fourth pass this season to lead the team. Safety Ross Madison recovered a blocked punt by Ishmael Banks for a score later in the third quarter. Also, later in the fourth quarter, Omyn Newkirk intercepted a pass for the first time this season and took it 92 yards for a touchdown.

Troy Krepich punted the ball well and made two PAT’s, and Steve Yun kicked off very well, and made two PAT’s as well.

Overall, the Hargrave coaching staff is excited to see the team turn the corner, and have one of their most complete games to date. The offense, defense, and special teams all played very well, and the Tigers look to their next game against Radford University to continue this positive trend.
