Fall 2009 PG Football vs. U.S. Naval Academy

Hargrave 18 – USNA 13

The Hargrave PG Football team was back in action this past Friday, traveling up to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD to take on the Junior Varsity Midshipmen. Despite rainy weather, and a couple of late turnovers, the Tigers were victorious, winning the game 18-13.

Offensively, the Tigers were paced by running back Bill Nyantakyi who carried 12 times for 147 yards. The diminutive tailback scored on a 71 yard touchdown, which proved to be the game winning score. Wide Receiver Sean Farr once again led the Tigers in receiving with six catches for 110 yards and two more touchdowns bringing his season total to four. Tight End Rob Fronk had two nice catches over the middle for 28 yards, and Wide Receiver Hakeem Haynie had three catches totaling 55 yards.

On the offensive line, Andy Bell played well and had his best performance to date from the offensive center position. The Tigers also got good performances from Robert Fitzgerald, Tom Pizzurro, and Terrance Hackney.

Defensively, Hargrave was active and physical, forcing Navy to fumble six times, including three for turnovers. Defensive tackle Josh Watson, once again made some big plays and forced a fumble that preserved the Tigers victory. Defensive ends Mike Thomas and Ego Ferguson Jr both played well and combined for 3 sacks and 5 tackles for loss.

Linebacker Foster Jones was all over the field for the Tigers and finished with 6 tackles and a forced fumble Linebackers Jimmy O’Grady made some big hits for the Tigers as well.

In the secondary, safety Calvin Tiggle finished with 7 tackles and a forced fumble, and safety Theron Norman finished with 3 tackles and a forced fumble. Cornerbacks Dylan Farrington and Ishmael Banks each had a pass break-up and patrolled the secondary not allowing Navy to have any big plays through the air. Cornerback William Speight was solid in run support as well.

Punter Troy Krepich did a good job of navigating the wet turf and consistently giving Navy bad field position, and kicker Steve Yun was great on kickoffs as well.

The Tigers are pleased to have beaten such a well-coached and disciplined Navy team, especially given the weather constraints. Next up for the Tigers will be Frostburg State on Monday, September 21.
