Financial Aid Options: Church Matching and More

Private school tuition can feel overwhelming. Hargrave’s comprehensive financial aid program includes one particularly unique option: Church Matching Funds. Combined with other aid sources, this program makes Hargrave accessible to families from diverse economic backgrounds.

Church Matching Funds: The Basics

Church Matching Funds is Hargrave’s most distinctive financial aid program. The concept is simple but powerful: your church or faith community contributes toward your son’s Hargrave tuition. Hargrave matches that contribution dollar-for-dollar up to one-third of tuition costs. Together, these funds can cover up to two-thirds of total tuition.

For example, if your church contributes $10,000 toward tuition, Hargrave matches with $10,000. Together, $20,000 significantly reduces the financial burden.

How Church Matching Works

The process requires partnership between three parties: your family, your faith community, and Hargrave. First, you present Hargrave’s mission and your son’s needs to church leadership. The church agrees to contribute a specific amount toward tuition. Hargrave matches that contribution dollar-for-dollar. The combined funds are applied to your tuition balance.

Churches can contribute through various means: direct payment from church funds, designated offerings from the congregation, fundraising events supporting your son, multi-year commitments that spread the cost, or partnership with multiple churches if your family attends more than one.

Why Churches Participate

Faith communities support families through Church Matching for compelling reasons. Hargrave’s Christian foundation and character development align with church values. Supporting young men’s spiritual growth fulfills the church’s mission. Investing in future leaders serves God’s kingdom. Helping families afford quality education demonstrates practical love. Building relationships with Hargrave creates ongoing connections.

Many churches view this as ministry—investing in a young man’s character and faith development represents a missional use of church resources.

Presenting to Your Church

Approaching church leadership might feel intimidating. Here’s how to do it effectively. Schedule a meeting with your pastor or appropriate church leaders. Bring Hargrave information highlighting its mission, values, and Four Pillars. Explain why Hargrave fits your son’s needs specifically. Share how Church Matching Funds work with dollar-for-dollar match. Ask if the church would prayerfully consider participating.

Be specific about the amount you’re requesting and how it would be paid over the school year. Churches appreciate clear, concrete requests rather than vague appeals.

What to Highlight

When presenting to your church, emphasize aspects that resonate with faith communities. Hargrave’s Baptist affiliation and Christian foundation show faith commitment. The faith pillar with mandatory chapel and Bible survey demonstrates spiritual formation. Character development through the Honor Code and values integration shows moral education. Leadership training produces young men who will lead churches and communities. The inclusive approach welcomes all faith traditions respectfully. And 100% college acceptance prepares young men for productive futures.

Help church leaders see that supporting your son’s Hargrave education serves both his development and the kingdom of God.

Multi-Year Commitments

Some churches prefer multi-year commitments. Rather than deciding annually, they commit to support throughout your son’s Hargrave career. This provides financial stability and planning confidence for your family, allows  the church to budget appropriately and creates an ongoing relationship between Hargrave and your faith community.

Multi-year commitments benefit everyone. Discuss this option with church leadership.

Combining Church Matching with Other Aid

Church Matching Funds work alongside other financial aid sources. You can combine merit scholarships reducing base tuition, need-based financial aid filling gaps, Church Matching Funds from your faith community, Alumni or Parent Referral discounts, and potentially Virginia Tax Credit Program benefits.

Together, these sources can make Hargrave surprisingly affordable. Don’t assume it’s financially impossible before exploring all options.

Merit Scholarships

Merit scholarships recognize academic achievement, leadership, and service. Students with 3.0+ GPA, demonstrated leadership, and proven service qualify. These scholarships are first-come, first-serve, so early application helps.

Merit scholarships don’t require financial need demonstration. They reward excellence and potential, making Hargrave more affordable even for families who don’t qualify for need-based aid.

Need-Based Financial Aid

Need-based aid uses a confidential application through the Clarity platform. The application considers family income and assets, household size and dependents, other children in private school or college, special circumstances affecting finances, and overall ability to pay.

Approximately half of Hargrave families receive some form of financial aid. The average grant is $11,000, though packages vary significantly based on need and available funds.

Alumni Referral Discount

If a Hargrave alumnus referred your family, mention this during application. The Alumni Referral Discount provides $2,500 per new enrolled boarding student. This rewards our alumni brotherhood while making Hargrave more accessible to families they recommend.

The alumni network is strong. Many families discover Hargrave through alumni recommendations.

Parent Referral Program

Current Hargrave parents can earn substantial tuition discounts by referring new families. The program offers $1,000 per boarding referral ($500 for day student referrals). Multiple successful referrals can earn up to $30,000 in total tuition discounts.

This recognizes that satisfied families are our best ambassadors. When parents enthusiastically share positive experiences, we want to acknowledge their support.

Virginia Tax Credit Program

Virginia families may benefit from the Virginia Tax Credit Program. This provides tax credits for donations to approved scholarship organizations supporting private school tuition. The program is complex, but Hargrave’s financial aid office can explain eligibility and benefits.

Virginia families should explore whether this program applies to them.

Educational Loans

Educational loans from various lenders provide another financing option. Hargrave’s financial aid office can provide information about loan programs, help families evaluate options, explain terms and repayment, and connect families with appropriate lenders.

Loans allow families to spread tuition costs over time rather than paying annually in full.

The Application Process

To access financial aid, first submit your admission application for your son. After acceptance, complete financial aid applications (Clarity platform for need-based aid). Merit scholarships are considered automatically if he qualifies. Indicate interest in Church Matching Funds during application. If an alumnus referred you, mention this for referral discount. Virginia families explore Tax Credit Program with financial aid office.

Financial aid packages typically arrive with acceptance letters, giving families complete information for enrollment decisions.

Early Application Advantage

Applying early provides financial aid advantages. More merit scholarship funds are available earlier in the cycle. Church Matching Funds take time to arrange with your faith community. Need-based aid is more readily available early in the season. Families have more time to plan financially.

If financial aid matters to your family, don’t delay application.

The Average Package

The average financial aid grant at Hargrave is $11,000. This varies dramatically based on need, merit, and sources. Some families receive smaller packages while others receive significantly larger assistance.

Half of Hargrave families receive some aid. You’re not alone in needing financial support.
