Hamilton Named Hargrave Basketbal Program Director

A.W. Hamilton at a GameHargrave Military Academy named its Head Postgraduate Basketball Coach A.W. Hamilton the Program Director of Hargrave Basketball. Hargrave has four basketball programs. In addition to the Postgraduate program, the Academy supports varsity, Junior Varsity and middle school programs. Hamilton will oversee all basketball teams at Hargrave under one unified program, and continue to grow Hargrave’s basketball tradition.

“We want to create continuity and consistency in our basketball programs, from middle school to postgraduate, and build on Hargrave’s strong basketball tradition,” Hargrave President Don Broome (BG, USA) said. “A.W. is the right man in the right job at the right time.”

Hamilton is entering his fifth season as Postgraduate Head Coach and tenth season overall with Hargrave.  During his Hargrave tenure, Hamilton has helped produce 88 NCAA Division I players, 18 NCAA Division II players and nine NBA players. Two former players, Terry Rozier (#16, Boston Celtics) and Montrezl Harrell (#32 Houston Rockets), were recently selected in the first round of the 2015 NBA Draft. Additionally, former player Dez Wells was immediately signed by the Washington Wizards after the draft concluded.

Hamilton’s postgraduate teams have averaged 37 wins per season, and he has been voted National Coach of the Year in 2012, as well as the East Regional Coach of the Year in both 2014 and 2015. Hamilton, a product of the Hargrave Class of 2000, spending one season playing for Hargrave Hall of Fame Coach Kevin Keatts, (now the head coach at UNC-Wilmington), before signing a full basketball scholarship with Wake Forest University.

Hamilton“To have the trust and support of General Broome, Trustee Ben Davenport, Chairman Bob White and the remainder of the Hargrave Trustees in becoming the Program Director of the entire basketball program at Hargrave is an amazing feeling,” Hamilton said. “I have a lot of pride and sweat equity in Hargrave. I was excited when I was named head coach. I am even more excited today as I get to put my stamp on every facet of our basketball program.”

Hargrave has compiled nine straight National Elite Eight appearances, six National Final Fours, two National Championship Runner-Ups, and were crowned National Champions in 2008. Additionally, the Hargrave Postgraduate Basketball Program was voted as the National “Program of the Decade” by RealGM in 2012.
