Hargrave battles Byrd in Scrimmage

Matt Brawn

With a week plagued by Rain, Snow, Hail and muddy fields the Tigers Lacrosse team took to a dry field Saturday afternoon in an exhibition contest against the Terriers of William Byrd. Prior to the first face-off the atmosphere was palpable as both teams were ready to do battle with each other after a long winter practicing against their own.

The terriers would strike first only 3 minutes into the game but saw their only lead of the game vanish 45 seconds later as attacker Cadet Chris Brunetti Notched his first goal of the season and his first in a Hargrave Uniform off a feeding pass from Cadet Stephen Chain. The Tigers would find the net 6 more times in the first quarter of play and then agian 4 times in the second quarter to give them a 10-2 lead at the half.

The second half of the game was would see many players from the Tigers bench see the field. For many it was their very first lacrosse game ever and a trial by fire learning experience. The Tigers would give up a couple man down goals as they took  a few penalties that are to be expected when working out the kinks at the beginning of the year. Brunetti would again lead the scoring charge in the second half of the game along with additional goals by Cadets Chain, Justin Malinow, Garrett Peterson, Russell Ferguson and Chandler O’Connor.

On the defensive half of the field Long Poles Cadets Ferguson, Logan Mitchell and James Sullivan each had a solid day as they were responsible for 4 interceptions, 5 knock downs and 2 take aways. Goaltender Cadet Ardian Roman struggled to find his rhythm early in the game but by the second half he had settled in to his role and lead the defense to an impressive performance with 11 saves on 18 shots as he recorded a .611 save percentage for the day.

While a scrimmage, the final outcome was 15-7 for Hargrave.
