Hargrave Edges New Covenant In Instant Classic

Playing in a second nail biter in as many days, the Tigers were able to pull out an important non-conference road victory against New Covenant by a score of 2-1.

The Tigers’ resolve was again tested early, allowing an 8th minute goal that found them facing an immediate deficit. Chris Czarnecki continued his dominance, finishing off a beautiful Raines Wall through ball to knot the score at 1-1, where the game would stay heading into the break.

The second half was a defensive battle throughout, with neither team having a great opportunity until the final minute of regulation. New Covenant was awarded a penalty and had a chance to win the game with no time remaining on the clock. Goalkeeper Brett Feller had to use every inch of his 6’5″ frame to parry the ball away from the net, but he did so successfully and forced the game to go into overtime.

“I can’t say enough about the guts that (Brett) Feller showed throughout the game, and especially on that Penalty Kick. It’s a testament to how hard he works on a daily basis in practice and the sheer desire to win. His composure in that nerve-racking situation was unbelievable.”

Fueled by the second chance that they were given in the extra frame, the Tigers quickly capitalized. Chris Czarnecki was able to find the back of the net for his second goal of the evening- a goal that would prove to be the game winner.

The Tigers will be back in action on Thursday, September 17th as they travel to Roanoke to take on Roanoke Valley Christian. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:30.
