Hargrave hosts VES

Coach Ed Ott

We, as a team, enjoyed having some home turf visitors watch as we dominated Virginia Episcopal School pretty much the whole night. It’s hard battling public schools with solid repeating programs when most of our guys are first years, but this time we went up against a school in our same situation. And, we looked GOOD.

Our boys out-wrestled their opponents. Most with pins, including Harris’ very first competitive, and rather entertaining, match. Cadet Harris struggled to incorporate all he has learned in the short time he has had to catch up with his peers and by sheer will, dominated his opponent and was rewarded with a pin in the third period (after finally listening to the advice we were screaming at him). Cadet Kines quickly settled into a low but tied score and kept his opponent at bay until the last 30 seconds before reversing and taking his opponent to his back to cinch the win. Cadet Mize went toe to toe in similar fashion for all three periods, necessitating an over-time period. Mize suffered our only loss and only by two points.

We even had time for a few exhibition matches with our own teammates where I, as the coach, had difficulty keeping my mouth shut and unfairly coaching one cadet over another.

VES was also unable to fill their roster for the match. The final score was 69 to 3 counting the forfeits. The score not counting forfeits was 27 to 3.

Tomorrow we leave bright and early to compete in an individual tournament in Staunton all day Saturday. Wish us luck (and skill, and stamina, and speed, etc.)!
