Hargrave Sends Five Swimmers to the Junior National Championship

Five members of Hargrave Military Academy’s swim team participated at the USA Junior National Championship in Orlando, Florida on March 17-21. Over 1700 of the best swimmers 18 or younger from across the country participated at the meet.

The fact that the Hargrave swim team was able to send five swimmers is quite an accomplishment. According to Hargrave Swim Coach Larry Simonov, it takes around five to six years of preparation time in order to qualify and participate in a meet like the Junior National Championship. In the course of the last five months, the five Hargrave swimmers who went the Junior Nationals surpassed that five year prep time with a tremendous amount of hard work and determination.

While Hargrave did not win the National Championship Title this year, they took 56th place in the 200 yard freestyle out of the 1700 top swimmers, placing them in the top 5% in that category!

Hargrave USA Junior National Team Members are listed as follows: Tony Romanini, Port Matilda, Pennsylvania; Eric Ponson, Oranjestad, Aruba; Benjamin Quay, Waterford, New York; Jesse Hechanova, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and Charles Totten, Jacksonville, Florida.
