Over the weekend, historic Walter Davis Gymnasium played host to the 2023 First Piedmont Corp. Invitational, an annual tournament featuring the Hargrave Tigers PG Basketball team and a host of talented teams that serves as a culminating event for the Tigers’ season each year! This year’s event saw the Tigers get tested in both the semifinals and finals but the team was able to rise to the challenge to secure the title after a pair of big victories!
The weekend started off for Hargrave against Shooting 4 Greatness, and, anyone that has worked in sports knows, it’s very hard to beat a team three times and that’s the test the Tigers had in front of them on Friday night. It was a fast start for Hargrave as they pushed their advantage up over twenty points in the first half and led at the break 52-31. However, after amassing a big second half lead, Shooting 4 Greatness kept chipping away and got their deficit as low as 12 points before Hargrave shut the door and emerged victorious, 106-91 to advance to Saturday’s championship game!
Saturday’s title tilt saw the Tigers facing a relatively familiar foe, the Greensboro Cavaliers, who they faced back in November. Despite winning big in their first meeting, Hargrave had a very slow start, particularly on the defensive end, as they surrendered 41 first half points but still held a narrow lead, 45-41 at the break. The second half was very similar to the first half with back and forth action but eventually the Tigers pushed their lead out to double digits and maintained that through the final buzzer, securing the 2023 First Piedmont Corp. Invitational Championship, 106-93!
