Hargrave Wins Fork Union Christmas Tournament

Hargrave traveled to Fork Union Military Academy to participate in the annual Fork Union Military Academy Christmas Tournament. The Tigers came away from the weekend champions of the tournament with a perfect 2-0 record, including a win over longstanding rival Fork Union in the championship. Game recaps are below:

Semi-Final: Hargrave 112, Spire Institute 105

Hargrave was propelled by a pair of huge performances by Tavin Lovan and Connor Crabtree in their semi-final win over Spire Institute. Lovan poured in 31 points and hauled in 9 rebounds while Crabtree scored 24 points (4 3ptm) with 6 assists. Jules Moor flirted with a double-double by scoring 17 points and pulling down 9 rebounds, while Tre King stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 steals in the win. Rob Peterson (8 points, 8 rebounds) also contributed a solid overall game for the Tigers.

Championship Game: Hargrave 86, Fork Union 71

In the latest edition of one of the longest standing rivalries in prep basketball, Hargrave emerged victorious on the road at Fork Union in Thomas Gymnasium to secure the 2017 Fork Union Christmas Tournament Championship. After some nervous moments for both teams in the opening minutes, the Tigers jumped out to an early 7 point lead and never looked back, stretching the margin as wide as 22 in the first half before heading into the break with a 18 point lead. Hargrave withstood a late run by Fork Union that got the lead back to single digits, but quickly countered and put the game out of reach, winning the game without ever trailing. The Tigers got meaningful contributions up and down the lineup, but were led by a handful of huge performances. Tavin Lovan scored 17 points and snagged 16 rebounds for his 5th double-double of the season, as well as the 9th time that he’s led Hargrave in rebounding. Trey McGowens led the Hargrave scoring attack, scoring 26 points on an efficient 13 shots to go along with 8 assists and 6 rebounds, while Connor Crabtree continued his hot shooting by scoring 20 points, including 5 3-pointers made. Bryce Beamer (11 points on 4-5 shooting and a charge taken) and Christian Lorng (11 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 blocks) both provided critical sparks to help propel the team to the championship game win.

Hargrave will be back in action Wednesday December 13th as they take on Bristol Prep at home in Walter Davis Gymnasium with a scheduled tip-off time of 5:00pm.
