JV Football vs. Tunstall

Hargrave 0 – Tunstall 14

On an unseasonably warm October evening, the Hargrave JV Football team made the short trek to Tunstall High School to take on the JV Trojans. Despite a 14-0 loss, the tigers came out and played what may have been their best game to date. While the score did not show it, Hargrave played right with Tunstall all night. A couple large penalties at inopportune times proved to be too much to overcome.

On offense, the ground attack was again lead by Dev Bailey, who rushed for over 100 yards! Reeves Hollar had a strong game carrying the ball with at least 70 yards rushing. Zak Kramer added to the offensive effort with several nice catches at key points in the game. The offensive line did a fine job blocking, allowing the running backs opportunities for large gains. Dev Bailey had a 40 yard run that would have put the ball on the 2 yard line, but it was called back for a penalty and the tigers were unable to finish the drive as a result. Later in the game the tigers drove all the way to the 8 yard line before losing the ball on a fumble. Despite moving the ball well all night, the offense was unable to put points on the board.

On defense, the line once again played a strong game. The tigers welcomed back Xavier Corpening (hand injury) who played very well at the defensive end position. In their first game running a 5-3 defense, the tigers covered the field well and were disciplined in their positions. Darrell McDowell had an interception that he returned 40 yards for a score, but it too was called back for a penalty against the tigers.

Despite moving the ball very well on offense and playing tough on defense, the tigers were unable to come away with a win. We continue to see improvement each week and continue to bond as a team. Everyone that dressed saw playing time against Tunstall and we returned to Hargrave with no major injuries. The tiger’s next game is at home against Virginia Episcopal School (10-11-07).
