JV Football vs. Virginia Episcopal School

Hargrave 0 – VES 14

With temperatures once again reaching the 90’s, the JV football team opened the season with a loss on the road to VES. Despite a great effort from the tigers, we came up short on the scoreboard. The offense was able to put together 2 long drives, with help from Dev Bailey and Michael Princivil, who paved the way on the ground and both had 10+ yard runs. Chris Ivery-Olds pulled in a long pass from Phillip Schwartz and shook a couple defenders before being brought down at the tiger 20 yard line. The offense put together a nice balanced running/passing attach, but just could not seem to find the endzone.

Defensively, the tigers allowed only 8 points, with the other 6 coming off an interception on our first offensive drive. The linebacker core of Xavier Corpening, Clay Carver, and Jonathon Lee helped to shut down the running game and force VES to go to the air. The defensive backs were challenged constantly and stood up to that challenge all afternoon. The defensive line had strong play from Charles Corpening, Mike Giles, Ryan Harper, and Kevin Weir, who recorded a sack for a huge loss. Richard Dube made his presence known by spending much of his time in the VES backfield. He recorded at least 3 tackles for a loss.

On special teams we had great punting from Reeves Hollar and caused fumbles from Michael Princivil and Xavier Corpening. Stanley Jones had great field awareness and picked up a fumble, keeping one offensive drive alive. Trey Kirkland proved to be valuable by playing multiple positions throughout the game from line to running back.

Overall, the tigers gave a great effort. With some fine-tuning we hope to start putting some W’s in the win column. Everyone who traveled got to play and we all came back healthy. Next week we will be the road again, traveling to Fork Union Military Academy.
