Hargrave JV Tennis closed its home season by hosting ORMA. They again showed great improvement as the JV Tigers demonstrated some depth in the talent pool.
Freshman Will Harris fought a long battle against ORMA Senior Ryan Adams. Despite streaks of shaky strokes and first serves that refused to land in play, Harris was able to work through his frustration and bring the match to a successful conclusion.
Playing his second match of the season, Andrew Urschel was able to break his opponent’s serve and cruised onto victory behind consistent play.
Tennis newcomer Joe Davis battled through a long and even match before finally breaking his opponent and holding serve to turn in an 8-5 performance. As the match progressed, Davis’ play improved markedly with his confidence and consistency.
Jestyn Ouellette debuted in match play against a much improved ORMA opponent.
The Doubles team of Harris and Davis once again went into the grinder against ORMA’s Adams and Bascile. All four players worked through some individual serve problems to change the nature of the match. The tight match score doesn’t adequately reflect the long points decided after solid rallies and aggressive play.
Urschel and Richard Newbold finished out the doubles competition. Newbold settled down to put his earlier singles loss firmly into the past. Coupled with teammate Urschel’s continued solid play, they were able to hand their opponents an 8-3 loss.
The JV Tennis Tigers’ record goes to 2-1 for the season. Their last match will be on the road against VES.
