Lewis Djonkam, one of the most hotly recruited big men in the 2017 class, ended his recruitment by signing a full basketball scholarship with Virginia Commonwealth University. Lewis played an integral part on the 2016-17 squad that went 43-2 and advanced to the national final four, notably the only player that appeared in every single contest this season. Known for his energy and enthusiasm on the court, Djonkam took an eye-popping 22 charges this season. His effort did not go unnoticed by Head Coach A.W. Hamilton:
” Lewis is one of the hardest working players we’ve had at Hargrave. He bring an intensity and passion every single time he steps on the court. His energy was always a boost to our effort, and in turn, made us a much more dangerous team. It is going to be hard to replace someone like Lewis, and I know VCU is going to absolutely love him. He will be a fan favorite immediately.”
Djonkam earned a bevy of scholarship offers over the course of the year after bursting onto the scene in the fall live period. Lewis went from zero Division 1 scholarship offers to 10 in a matter of weeks, and carried that momentum throughout the season to finally earn an offer from one of his dream schools. Lewis is one of twelve players from this year’s team to earn a Division 1 scholarship, and one of 14 players overall to earn a scholarship.
