Martin Reaches Milestone

The Hargrave Tigers defeated Virginia Beach Sports Academy on Wednesday afternoon, 91-60, earning their 28th win of the season in what proved to be a milestone victory for Head Coach Lee Martin.

In just his 111th game as head coach of the Tigers, Martin earned his 100th career victory, all before his 30th birthday. “It’s a surreal feeling,” remarked Martin. “I have been extremely fortunate in my time here to be surrounded by great players and great people. This a huge honor and I’m very humbled.”

The Tigers, who boast a 28-3 overall record this season, controlled the pace for the final 32 minutes of Wednesday’s game. After both teams traded baskets, the Tigers went on a 29-0 run to take a 54-20 lead into the break. Both K.D. Johnson and Jordan Johnson led the Tigers as they finished with 18 points and 14 points respectively. In the second half, the story was much of the same as Hargrave held on for the 91-60 victory and saw other strong performances from Gabe Wiznitzer (11 points), Bryson Childress (9 points) and AJ James (8 points).

“This has been an incredible run,” said Martin. “My seven years here as a coach have been the best years of my life. The players have been outstanding. Just in my three years as head coach alone, we have guys currently playing at TCU, Tennessee, UAB, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, High Point, and Eastern Kentucky, just to name a few. We’ve had so many great players but they’ve been even better young men, that’s what makes Hargrave special and that’s truly what makes today’s win mean that much more to me. I’m excited to start working on the next 100!”

Hargrave is back in action this weekend as they head to the Massanutten Military Circuit event on Saturday and Sunday. The Tigers will take on Convenant College Prep and Scotland Campus (Red). Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 PM for both days.
