Messinger Earns VIC and O.B. Teague ’42 Coach of the Year Honors

Hargrave Military Academy is proud to recognize Coach Thomas Messinger for both his VIC Coach of the Year award and as the recipient of the 2014-15 O.B. Teague ’42 Coach of the Year award.

Messinger, in his first year at the helm of the Varsity Basketball team, had an overall record of 14-11 against a tough level of competition. Throughout the year, Messinger’s Tigers notched notable wins over Highland School, Steward School, and Roanoke Catholic among others.

For their efforts during the regular season, Hargrave earned the #2 seed for the VIC Conference Tournament after an 8-4 conference record. The Tigers advanced to the VIC Conference Tournament Championship game that was snowed out. The upstart Tigers, led by their aforementioned first year head coach, made some noise around the VIC and Messinger was awarded for his success by being named the VIC Coach of the Year for the 2014-15 season.

Messinger’s Tigers held serve inside Walter Davis Gymnasium with an impressive 10-2 record at home. Hargrave earned a berth in the VISAA Division 2 State Tournament which was an incredible achievement for Messinger in his first year as head coach.

While the rest of the state took notice of Messinger’s rapid rise, his success did not go unnoticed internally as he earned the O.B. Teague ’42 Coach of the Year award. Messinger was the first first year head coach to receive the award and it is an honor he holds in high regard. It’s safe to say that Coach Messinger has laid a tremendous framework for future success for the Varsity Basketball program during his first year as head coach.
