For the second time in his illustrious Hargrave coaching career, Head Postgraduate Basketball Coach, Thomas Messinger has been lauded with the recognition of earning the O.B. Teague ’42 Coach of the Year Award!

Messinger, who previously won the O.B. Teague ’42 Coach of the Year Award back in 2015 as the Head Varsity Basketball Coach, began his era at the helm of Hargrave’s storied Postgraduate Basketball program in outstanding fashion. The Tigers started off the year by winning 29 straight games including wins in marquee matchups against The Skills Factory, DME Academy, long time rivals Fork Union Military Academy, and Massanutten Military Academy – all of which were ranked in the top 12 nationally. Messinger’s squad vaulted to the #2 ranking in the national polls and earned a spot in the National Prep Championship as they capped off an incredible 31-1 season.

Hargrave averaged a mind blowing 113 points per game this past season, while shooting over 40% as a team from the beyond the three point line. Under Messinger’s leadership, the Tigers had young men sign scholarships to a number of high level colleges and universities, such as Ohio University, Georgetown University, Duquesne University, Georgia Tech, and Arizona State University to name a few. In total, members of the 2020-21 Hargrave Postgraduate Basketball team have earned over $1.5 million in scholarship dollars this season.

Messinger has been a staple in the Hargrave community since his arrival in Chatham and the Academy is proud to honor him with the 2020-21 O.B. Teague ’42 Coach of the Year honors!
