Middle School Basketball Closes Season

Gary Rath

The Hargrave Middle School Basketball team traveled to Lynchburg on Thursday, February 16, 2012, to play the Gaels of Holy Cross in their final game of the season. The Tigers were stone cold in the first quarter. Although they played well and had good shots, they could not buy a basket, and fell behind 0-16. They never gave up, however, and continued playing hard to the very end. The Tigers actually outscored Holy Cross for the last 3 quarters of the game, 28-25, but it was not enough to make up the deficit from the first quarter. Cadet Isaiah Guzman led all scorers with 20 points, and Cadet Zach Packer and Cadet Gabriel Cabral added 6 and 2 points, respectively.

The final score was Hargrave 28 – Holy Cross 41.

The members of the team made a lot of improvement from the beginning of the season, and learned a lot about basketball. They finished with a record of 3-10, and had the experience of playing in a number of very exciting games. Although they did not win every game, they will be remembered for always playing hard to the end and never giving up.

Guzman was the leading scorer for the season with 124 points. Packer had 75, Cadet Slater Barefoot 64, Cadet Ben Badami 19, Cabral 16, Cadet Zach Szostak 14, Cadet Ryan Phillips 3 and Cadet Tim Fonfara had two points.

The Hargrave Middle School Basketball team would like to thank everyone who supported our efforts this year. We had a lot of fun, and hope that everyone enjoyed the season.
