Post Graduate Football picks up Big Win in Ohio!

Scott McConnell

The Post Graduate football team traveled to Ashland, Ohio and took on the Ashland University Eagles this past Monday. The P.G. Tigers came away with a 44-26 victory on the road.

The Post Graduate football team had a great trip to the amish country of Ohio. As they arrived on Ashland’s campus, the team was given a tour of their new athletic complex as well as sat in with a represenative of the admissions office as he explained more about the university itself. The players were able to get a great understanding about the university and their goals as a football program.

On the field of play, the P.G. Tigers came out and attack the Ashland defense with their rushing game. Running Back Nigel Rainbow had 1 rushing touchdown on the day. Irving Huggins did the most damage accouting for 104 yards rushing on the day and 2 touchdowns. Trevor Vasey directed the offense from the Quarterback position throwing for over 200 yards. The offense was balanced and continued to improve as the game went on.

The big plays of the day were made by the special team units. The kickoff team continually held the Ashland return game. Jeremy Irving accounted for 4 tackles on the kickoff team. Tyrus Lawson, Hildon Bush Jr., & Caleb Bruce also made heavy contributions on the kickoff team. Caleb Bruce delievered a mammoth hit the also caused a fumble. On the reverse side, the kickoff return team had their best game of the season. Returner David Jones averaged nearly 40 yards a return, including a 90 yard return for a touchdown. Ted Rice made some key blocks that helped with the big returns.

Defensively the Tigers were “bend but not break” as the held the Ashland offense. LInebacker Will Rumph came up with 4 tackles, 1 including a bone jarring hit on an Ashland Tight End as he came across the middle of the field. Ryan Graves, Miles Grooms, & James Jackson all helped provide pressure on the Ashland offense from their defensive line positions. Defensive Backs Devonte Brown & De’Andre Scott each had pass break-ups on the day, and Austin Copeland secured an interception late in the game to seal the victory.

The Post Graduate football team has a week off before the last contest of the season. The P.G. Tigers next take the field at home on Friday, November 4th @ 7p.m against their rivals of Fork Union Military Academy. There will also be a ceremony honoring former player Torry Holt ’95 and former P.G. Head Coach Robert Prunty ’83 on their inductions in to the P.G. Football Hall of Fame during the game. Please come out and support the players in this last and important game, and share in the recognition of these 2 amazing alumni.
