Tiger Swimmers on a Roll in the ODAC!

Amanda Weishaar

The Hargrave Tigers Swimming/Diving team continues their string of success, placing 1st in their second consecutive meet! Here’s a breakdown of Tuesday’s action from Head Coach, Amanda Weishaar!

Thank you to everyone for the support on another successful home swim meet. Time flew by and we were even done in time for our faithful spectators to walk across the track to watch the Varsity Basketball team!

This time we hosted Chatham Hall and Roanoke Catholic School (RCS). It was very good that RCS were able to bring quite a few 7th graders which gave our 7th graders some healthy competition and to allow them to compete with individuals their own age and experience.

  • The start of the swim meet saw the 200 Medley Relay. It was an exciting time that saw strong and stiff competition for our A and B teams. Our A time beat RCS’s as Bryce Adkins (Gretna, VA ’23) played catch up and overtook RCS’s relay swimmer to win by 0.31 seconds! Meanwhile our B team won by 5 seconds as Nathaniel Duff (Vernon Hill, VA ’23) and Patrick Souza (Halifax, VA ’25) as 3rd and 4th swimmer’s pulled away from their opponents.
  • Our 200 Freestyle swimmer’s had their first opportunity to swim this event. Aiden Dykstra (Ten Sleep, WY ’23) came in 1st for HMA; and 2nd overall; Isaac Wadsworth (San Antonio, FL ’26) came in 2nd for HMA; and 3rd overall; and Jonathan Posey (Forest, VA ’23) finished off the top 3 for HMA; and finishing 5th overall. This allowed us to score 14 points for this one event!
  • 200 IM saw Will Campion (Chesapeake, VA ’22) come in 1st for HMA; and 2nd overall; and Junior Verwest (Fort Myers, FL ’26) came in 2nd for HMA; and 3rd overall. Both scored good times for their first 200 IM this season.
  • 50 Freestyle was a huge success for the boys. Such huge improvements:
    • Bryce Adkins (Gretna, VA ’23) came in 1st overall and dropped his time by nearly half a second! – :27.52
    • Nathaniel Duff (Vernon Hill, VA ’23) dropped an impressive 2.74 seconds to come in 2nd overall!
    • Roger Adams (Chatham, VA ’23) broke the 30 second barrier and finished 4th overall
    • Ethan Teluk (Manilus, NY ’22) dropped 0.18 seconds
    • Kelsten Hudson (Danville, VA ’25) dropped more time by 0.11 seconds
    • Carson Pan (Bellevue, VA ’27) dropped 0.91 seconds
    • Daniel Shepler (Memphis, TN ’27) dropped 1.18 seconds
    • Zain Satti (Danville, VA ’25) is staying consistent with his training and he’s becoming more comfortable in his technique. He did an awesome dolphin kick off the blocks and really worked hard.
  • 100 Butterfly saw Sebastian Medina (Danville, VA ’23) unable to drop further time but was good enough to finish 1st overall. Patrick Souza in his 1st 100 Butterfly came in 4th out of 5 swimmer’s and dug deep and kept pushing forward.
  • We had 2 swimmer’s in the 100 Freestyle. Bryce Adkins (Gretna, VA ’23) was on fire and was just off breaking 1 minute – but still dropped 5.73 seconds and came in 1st overall. Sonny Le (Houston, TX ’23) coming in 3rd overall.
  • For the 500 Freestyle no Chick Fil A was offered but Legs Classen (McLean, VA ’25) volunteered as he wanted to beat his first attempt time. He did that by smashing his personal best record by 48 seconds! And he’s already signed up for the 500 Freestyle in the next swim meet!
  • In the 2nd relay of the meet, the boys A relay won convincingly by 10 seconds. What was most impressive was that Aiden Dystra as the lead swimmer swam a 27.52 seconds. The exact same time as Bryce Adkins swam in the individual 50 Freestyle. So it looks like we have an internal competition going on!
  • The 100 Backstroke was an interesting contest. Both Nathaniel Duff (Vernon Hill, VA ’23) and RCS’s top backstroker fought neck-and-neck throughout the entire event. Nathaniel just pulled ahead to finish 1st overall. And his competitor 2nd overall. And then they were both disqualified for infractions! So this left it open to the other’s. Zain Satti (Danville, VA ’25) in his 1st 100 backstroke came in 2nd overall to score us 6 valuable points!
  • 100 Breaststroke saw Sebastian Medina (Danville, VA ’23) come in 1st overall; and Sonny Le (Houston, TX ’23); Ethan Teluk (Manilus, NY ’22) and Will Campion (Chesapeake, VA ’22) finishing in 3rd, 4th and 5th place overall scoring us 17 points.
  • Finishing up the swimming portion of the night was the 400 Freestyle relay. The A team won convincingly, but the B team had to fight from behind all the way until Roger Adams (Chatham, VA ’23) as the 4th swimmer really applied the speed and overtook RCS’s A team 4th swimmer in the final 25 yards!
  • So that just left the diving portion of the evening. Both Jagger Ellis (Parker, CO ’27) and Patrick Souza (Halifax, VA ’25) were unable to improve upon their scores of last week but still provided the spectators with an awesome show of agility and acrobatics.

The scores were in our favor with the strong performances of the boys. It finished:
HMA 148 – RCS 106

The boys are really getting into a groove and finding joy in the events they are being placed in. They are welcoming the challenge and supporting each other both in and out of the water. I am proud of how they are working together and finding strength within themselves to perform their best. Things are moving in the right direction and the boys deserve your praise!
