Wrapping up their regular season and playing in the historic Carmichael Arena, where some of the all-time greats like Michael Jordan and James Worthy called home, the Hargrave Tigers were able to pull away with a 97-80 victory against the UNC JV team on the University of North Carolina’s Dean Smith Tribute night. Nostalgia was definitely in the air as Tar Heel nation piled into the former home of UNC’s men’s basketball program, creating a memorable atmosphere for each and every player that stepped onto the court.
The Tigers started slow against the Tar Heels, but bounced back in a big way to secure the runaway victory. Naji Marshall was a beast once again for the Tigers, securing his 18th double-double of the year by scoring 32 points (12-14 from the floor, 3-3 from 3pt) to go along with 12 rebounds. The Tiger back court of Brandon Knapper (20 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists) and Braxton Beverly (21 points, 9 assists, 5 rebounds) also had strong performances in the win. Lewis Djonkam provided an invaluable spark with his effort and energy, changing the game with his 8 points, 8 rebounds, 6 deflections, 2 blocks and 2 steals.
The win closes out the Tigers’ regular season with a record of 41-1, and extends their winning streak to 27 games. The Tigers will look to defend their National Championship and have earned the #2 seed in the upcoming National Prep Championship Tournament, held March 8th and 9th in New Haven, CT.
