Tigers Continue to Take Steps Forward

Benjamin J Veshi

On Friday evening, the Hargrave Tigers took the field against the Raiders from North Cross. Hargrave was defeated 62-0, falling to 2-6 on the season, but continues to making promising strides coming down the home stretch of the season.

Coming off a big rivarly win over Fishburne in their last game, the Tigers were determined to continue their winning ways as they faced their most formidable opponent yet in North Cross. The Hargrave defense continued to play with a chip on their shoulder, showing their “reckless abandonment mentality” as Head Coach, Jeff Schaum, continues to describe the Tiger defense. However, as has been the case this season, the injury bug hampered the Tigers early on as their defensive leader, Peyton Johnson, left the game early in the first quarter. Without Johnson’s presence, the Tigers looked to Rob Sovula, David Hubbard, Jr., Nick Hammock, Frank Piccione, and CJ Farmer to step their games up defensively. Despite their best efforts, North Cross had too much offensive firepower for this young Tigers’ defense.

On the offensive side of the ball, quarterback, Mason Anderson, was ready to roll as Hargrave took to the air early and often. The highlight of the night came when Anderson found a streaking David Hubbard, Jr. running up the Hargrave sideline and Hubbard, Jr. came away with an impressive one handed snag and then scampered out of bounds after a 55 yard gain. The Hargrave offensive line gave Anderson plenty of time in the pocket and Andrew Ponton, Mason Rucker, CJ Farmer, Kip Barksdale, Frank Piccione, Cameron Coburn, and JT Coley played one of their best games up front this season.

The Tigers are back in action on Saturday, November 2nd, as they face off against Catholic High School. Saturday’s game will also be Senior Night for Hargrave; kick-off is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
