Tigers Defeat Fishburne in Big Rivalry Game!

Benjamin J Veshi

Hargrave traveled to Waynesboro, Virginia to take on Fishburne Military School in a long-time rivalry game. The Tigers came away victorious, 21-16, to move to 2-5 on the season.

It was a beautiful fall afternoon and the Tigers were determined to play their best football of the season against their arch-rivals. As has been the case for most of the season, the defense set the tone for the game early as Hargrave had eight players with double digit tackles (Peyton Johnson, Frank Piccione, Rob Sovula, CJ Farmer, Malachi Jackson, Andrew Ponton, Shy’Heim Davis and Mason Rucker). Johnson galloped 35 yards on a scoop and score fumble recovery after CJ Farmer leveled the running back, knocking the ball from his hands. On the night, the Tiger defense accounted for 12 tackles for loss (49 yards) and two interceptions, to go along with the fumble recovery.

Offensively, Peyton Johnson was able to utilize some outstanding offensive line play as he racked up 151 yards on 15 rushing attempts. Shy’Heim Davis added a rushing touchdown from two yards out and Stephen Scearce hauled in a seven yard touchdown from quarterback, Mason Anderson. David Hubbard, Jr. was also instrumental in the Hargrave passing game, having two catches for 40 yards with a long of 33 yards.

However, like most rivalry games, this game went down to the wire. With under two minutes to go, Fishburne drove down the field and scored, making it a one possession game. On the ensuing kick-off, Fishburne recovered an onside kick, which gave them a chance to win the game. But the Hargrave defense answered the call and Rob Sovula came up with a massive interception which sealed the win for the Tigers!

Hargrave is back in action on Friday, October 25th from Dick Dyer Field with another VIC match-up as North Cross comes to town. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
