Tigers Earn 100th Straight Home Win

In front of a raucous crowd in Walter Davis Gymnasium, the Hargrave Post-Graduate Basketball Team achieved a historic milestone that has rarely- if ever- been seen in prep basketball. With their resounding 106-69 over #8 ranked Mt. Zion (MD), the #5 ranked Tigers earned their 100th straight victory at home. The last time Hargrave suffered a defeat in Walter Davis Gymnasium was January 25th, 2014- nearly five full calendar years. Hargrave faced some stiff competition during that stretch as well, playing 11 teams that were ranked in the top 10 nationally during the 100 game streak. Since that last loss, the Tigers have an overall record of 191-15, captured the 2016 National Prep Championship and have sent over 55 players to Division 1 schools.

“This is a culmination of a years of hard work from our players and world-class support from the Hargrave community,” said Head Coach Lee Martin. ” These young men hold a special place in the history of a program that has had an incredible amount of success and means so much to all the players that have come before. The alumni support as we’ve approached this milestone has been overwhelming- Hargrave is a truly one of a kind.”

Coach Martin was also quick to point out that the Hargrave fans have made a huge impact on the sustained success achieved at home. “We have the best student section in the country. There have been a number of games against high level competition that have come down to the wire. The Corps of Cadets really stepped up and helped us through those games.”

The streak, started under then-Head Coach A.W. Hamilton (69 wins), who is now the Head Coach at Eastern Kentucky University and continued under current Head Coach Lee Martin (31 wins), has seen it’s fair share of memorable contests. From Tyrone Taylor’s three free throws with no time on the clock to beat Fork Union in 2015 to Braxton Beverly scoring 70 points during the Fight Against Cancer Challenge in 2016, Walter Davis Gymnasium has been the home of some of the highest-level, exciting basketball in the country.

Hargrave isn’t ready to rest on their laurels yet though- they were back in action Saturday, picking up home win #101 in a row. The Tigers will be back in action on Wednesday against Moravian Prep, with a 10:00am tip-off time in the 2nd Annual “Shooting for Success” game. For those unable to attend, you can catch the game live-streamed on Hargrave’s Facebook page.
