Tiger’s edge VES in a close game

Coach Joe Moran

This past Tuesday, the JV basketball team took on a very good team from VES.

VES came in undefeated(5-0) and playing well. But, we’ve been playing well too. It would be a defensive struggle from the beginning, their length against our quickness. The Tigers held an 8-4 lead after the first quarter. Both offenses came alive in the second quarter and the Tigers went to halftime with an 18-11 lead. VES stepped up the intensity in the third quarter and held the Tigers to just 2 points in the quarter and led 21-20 headed into the final frame. VES grabbed momentum to start the fourth and scored the first four points and led 25-20 with 5:00 minutes to play. The Tigers didn’t quit and found their second wind and went on an 8-0 run to take the lead 28-25 with 3:00 to play.

Both teams battled back and forth until the Tigers forged ahead 35-34 with under a minute to play. With the clock running down VES hit a deep three to seemingly win the game but there was still 24 seconds to play. The Tigers worked for a good shot with about 10 seconds to play, it bounced off the rim but Cadet Rogers snagged the rebound, found Cadet Drakeford open on the wing who shot without hesitation. The shot was pure and true for three points, which gave the Tigers a 2 point lead with 8 seconds to play. VES only had time for a half court heave and everyone mauled Cadet Drakeford in celebration.

The final score was 37-35, Cadet Drakeford led the scoring for the Tigers with 12 points, Cadets Wheeler and Peluso chipped in with 8 points apiece for a balanced Tiger attack.
