This past weekend, the Hargrave Military Academy Tiger Varsity Basketball team played in the 1st Annual St. Anne’s-Belfield Tip-Off Classic and brought the title back to Chatham after defeating Tandem Friends School, 77-57, in the opening round on Friday afternoon, and then defeated the hosts, St. Anne’s-Belfield, 84-65 in the championship game on Saturday afternoon. Hargrave moved to 2-0 to start the season.
Stifling defense led the Tigers to the victory on Friday afternoon against Tandem Friends, despite a cold shooting performance across the board. Chance Keyes ’19, Matthew Brown, Jr. ’19, and Chris Gray ’18 played inspiring minutes off the bench and provided a much needed lift early in the game. Gray canned three three-pointers in his varsity debut.
In the championship game on Saturday, Hargrave bounced back and torched the nets to the tune of 62.0% from the field-including an impressive 13-23 performance from three point range en route to a convincing victory over St. Anne’s-Belfield. Both Korbin Spencer ’19 and Maurice Wilcox ’18 combined to nail six three pointers in the first half, while Seneca Louis ’18 and Benson Lin ’18 flew around the rim with some impressive finishes. Both Louis and Lin combined for 10 assists, 15 rebounds, 13 deflections, and 6 steals during the course of the afternoon. Following the championship game, Benson Lin ’18, was named the Tournament MVP.
