Tigers Lacrosse starts season with a win against Roanoke Catholic

The Hargrave Tigers opened their season yesterday against conference rival Roanoke Catholic. In a true VIC rivalry match-up, the Tigers played a hard fought game and through a continued team effort came away with a 7-6 victory. Attackmen Walker Thompson and Midfielder Stephen Chain lit the offensive spark for the Tigers helping them jump out to a 5-1 lead at the half. At the conclusion of the first half of play the Tigers had great defensive performances from Russell Ferguson, Ryan Brown and Nicholas Foster and Goaltender Adrian Roman.

The Celtics of Roanoke Catholic came out in the third quarter and took advantage of the man up opportunities as they were able to convert on 4 of their 6 man up advantages for goals. The final period of play would give the fans plenty of excitement as each team traded goals early with Hargrave still holding on to the lead at 6-5. Midway through the fourth quarter of play the Celtics would find the back of the net once more tieing the game at 6-6. With about 1:35 left on the game clock goalie Adrian Roman came up with a masterful save , which was quickly cleared through the midfield and converted into the game winning goal by Midfielder Mitchell Baker.

It was a great win for the Tigers who will now refocus as they travel to Lynchburg to take on New Covenant School at 4:30 Tuesday March 19th.
